Hello everyone, and welcome to the week! It’s time once again for our look back at the noteworthy updates of the last seven days. It seems like business is finally picking up again, as we’ve got a pretty decent mix of titles in this week’s grab bag of goodies. I’ve picked out what I think are the finest or most interesting to give you something to read while you process your Monday. Of course, you can keep an eye out for updates yourself using AppShopper or by participating in the TouchArcade forums. This weekly summary is just here to fill you in on the things you might have missed. Let’s dig in!
Dungeons of Chaos REVAMPED ED., $5.99 This is not a big update, but it does involve bears, sort of. And that’s one train I’m willing to board every time, albeit with caution. Anyway, this game updates very frequently, and that sometimes means each individual update might only have one or two things in it. In this case, that new thing is a new mob for you to fight. Our Australians readers surely know of the everyday terror that is the Drop Bear. While you have had to learn to live your life around these cunning and vicious marsupials, they remain a foreign threat to the rest of the world. Well, if you can’t meet them in reality, you can now meet them in the fantasy world of Dungeons of Chaos.
Getting Over It, $4.99 I guess this is one of the hot new things that all the kids are playing. Not me! Climbing mountains for fun? Pfah! When I was a kid, we called that “going to school". Both ways! But if you are playing this, please enjoy the latest version that adds a new input mode, a new leaderboard, a better input sensitivity slider, and a few other little tweaks to the UI. Also, lots of bug fixes! But only the bad bugs, don’t worry. I can’t wait for the next surprise mobile hit, “Getting Hit with a Meter-Stick for Smarting Off to the Teacher".
Into the Dead 2, Free I know if I’ve got massive groups of shambling hordes of the undead bearing down on me, what I’m going to reach for is a bow. Wait, no! That’s not a great idea, no matter how cool it looks! But games are a world of imagination and make-believe, where you can enjoy the cool look of a bow without worrying about whether or not it will keep you more alive than a shotgun. Into the Dead 2 has some new bows. I did not pull this comment out of nowhere. There is also some new explosive and incendiary ammo for those bows, and you can now knock enemies back or pin them. Like Hawkeye!
Candy Crush Soda Saga, Free So here’s the obligatory King update for this one. Well, it’s not obligatory, I suppose. But sometimes you have to make a certain kind of milkshake to bring the quote-unquote boys to the yard, and we all want a full yard because this metaphor is breaking down fast. At any rate, if you’ve finished all of the levels that were in Candy Crush Soda Saga, you’ve surely noticed that there are now 15 more. That’s the update. We did it.
Minion Rush: Running game, Free Remember Despicable Me 3? Of course you do! Especially that highly-memorable chap Bratt. Well, with the next Minion-related movie now a couple of years away, Minion Rush has got to milk that bad-boy for all it’s worth. That means Bratt is back in a new special event called Bratt’s Comeback. Collect dolls, bubblegum, and Rubik’s Cubes! Get some new lab coat or something! Take another run through Bratt’s Lair! This all sounds kind of horrible! But I imagine for fans of the little Minion guys, it’s all good. They like bananas, how about that? Silly Minions.
Rules of Survival, Free I wasn’t kidding. This game is legit going to be here pretty much every week from now on. As long as the updates are as rich as they have been, though, I won’t mind writing them up too much. Like, look at this one. They added the ability to fire your weapons when you’re in the passenger seat in a vehicle. Yes, you can now call Shotgun for its original purpose! There’s a new Fireteam mode, a new high frame rate mode you can activate at your discretion, and a bunch of other things that I’m not going to list because I’ve got other games to get to here. Let’s just be content that players of this game have had some new stuff to look forward to every single week lately.
Temple Run 2, Free Wow, happy birthday, Temple Run 2! Five years old already? Time truly is a cruel creature of chaos that speeds up when we are having fun and slows to a crawl when we are not. Yet we would bargain for more of it with everything we have. Ah, existence! At least there’s cake. And wouldn’t you know it? This anniversary update includes cake, or rather a coin skin that looks like cake. Do not eat it. That would be bad, not just because it is a coin but also because it is in fact a digital representation of a coin that is inside your mobile device. Party hat? New objectives? I guess there’s a new costume, too. I don’t know, I’m still caught up on the cake-coins.
Flipping Legend, Free I like this game a lot because it feels like I’m getting away with cussing every single time I say its name. Flipping Legend. Who wouldn’t want to be a Flipping Legend? Ha. There is a new zone in Flipping Legend, and it is a swamp. Yes, a Flipping swamp. There’s also a new Flipping character with a unique new special ability. The Flipping level cap has been raised to Flipping eleven, so you’ve got one more Flipping ability point to work with for each character. The Flipping developers have also reduced the Flipping gold costs for unlocking new characters, and also reduced the Flipping XP requirements to level those Flipping characters up. Flipping great. Ha.
Robot Wants Kitty, Free Every week, some updates fall in what I call the Zone of Unfortunate Doom. This is the time period between when I, in Japan, finish writing the article and Eli or Jared, in America, post it. Updates that hit in that period aren’t included in the current week’s article for obvious reasons, but I also often forget to put them in the next week’s article. But not this time! Robot Wants Kitty is a great game, and its update must be acknowledged. It adds new tiles for level creators! It expands level sharing! It fixes bugs and makes the app work on iOS 11! And it also wins a coveted UMMSotW award! How about that?
SimCity BuildIt, Free Arguably the finest official SimCity game currently available on iOS, SimCity BuildIt sure is a game. It’s kind of at the stage of its life where it flits half-heartedly from event to event, and that’s what this update is all about. We’re just about finished with the Festival event, though you still have a couple of days to mop things up if need be. The new event, focused on Valentine’s Day, starts on February 1st. There are ten Valentine-themed buildings to collect in all. Can you get them all? I don’t think this is really what a SimCity game should be about, but it is what it is, I suppose.
The Simpsonsâ„¢: Tapped Out, Free The latest event in Simpsons: Tapped Out is on. It’s called Bart Royale/Homergeddon and it pits the youth of Springfield against the adults. You can add Wendell, Pyro, General Bart, a statue of Bart showing his butt, and a bunch of other barrel-bottom-scraping stuff to your virtual Springfield. It looks like you just have to tap bad guys to earn beer that is exchanged for the goodies, so get tapping. Yeah. Tap bad guys, get beer, earn Bart’s butt bronzed. Boy oh boy.
That about wraps it up for last week’s significant updates. I’m sure I’ve missed some, though, so please feel free to comment below and let everyone know if you think something should be mentioned. As usual, major updates will likely get their own news stories throughout this week, and I’ll be back next Monday to summarize and fill in the blanks. Have a great week!
