I’m not sure if it invented it, but at least for me personally my earliest memories of the “shooting yourself out of a series of cannons to move through a level" mechanic came from the Donkey Kong Country games on SNES. There’s something really fun about timing your blasts just perfectly so you can rapidly fire from one to another like some sort of explosive ballerina. The mechanic has been used on mobile too, and the most prominent example I can think of off the top of my head is Big Pixel’s adorable Land-a Panda ($0.99). Now developer Squadventure wants to take that cannon-shooting mechanic and crank it up to 11 with their upcoming game Blocky Blast.
I hate to say it, but the “Verby Noun" naming convention had me side-eying Blocky Blast when I first heard about it, but upon checking out that trailer I realized this was one to get excited for. It looks like there’s a lot of interesting varieties of cannons and different elements to make your way through the game’s 40+ levels, and I definitely get a vibe of Laser Dog’s brilliant platformer HoPiKo ($0.99) splashed in there as well. In addition to working your way through the game’s levels there are also 30 different characters in Blocky Blast, and it sounds like Squadventure already has plans for more levels and characters in future updates. If this one is looking cool to you as well you don’t have long to wait as Blocky Blast is arriving this Thursday so be sure to check it out in our weekly new games roundup.
