Harmonix changed the gaming industry a few years back when it brought to us all those fake, plastic instruments and games like Rock Band, and now it’s hoping to revive the genre but with a very different offering. The upcoming Dropmix uses physical cards on a physical board of sorts and uses your iOS or Android device (through a free app) to play the music you’ll create in real time. The way it plays is every card represents a different part of the song’s arrangement – could be vocals, bass, drums, etc – and as you play a card on the board, you can hear the custom mix of the current song change in real-time. You earn points by playing cards, and the first player to reach 21 points wins.
The game will launch with various modes, one of which is Clash Mode, where you play either 1v1 or 2v2. The game will come out this September, and it will come with 300 cards spanning genres. That’s pretty much all we have for now, but I’m curious to see whether physical music games still have a future in the gaming industry of today.
