Hello everyone, and welcome to the week! It’s time once again for our look back at the noteworthy updates of the last seven days. Phew, now this is a slow week. Well, nothing to be done about it, I suppose. There were at least a few really cool updates at least, so I tried my best. Of course, you can keep an eye out for updates yourself using AppShopper Social (Free), the watchlist in the TouchArcade App (Free), or by participating in the TouchArcade forums, but this weekly summary is here to fill in the things you might have missed. Let’s dig in!
SpellTower Classic, $2.99 A long-time staple of any discriminating iOS gamer’s library, SpellTower doesn’t seem like the kind of game that would need much in the way of updates apart from maintaining compatibility. Well, if that’s what you think, wrong you would be, my fine friends. First up, the game now sources its words from the sassiest dictionary on Twitter, Merriam-Webster. Next, a new Zen mode which plays similarly to Puzzle mode but without the length requirements. The multiplayer mode is back and now supports online play. The game now has support for newer hardware screen sizes, and if you’re on an iPad Pro 12", you can even enjoy a special Super Tower mode. All of that plus a few other little fixes make this feel like a whole new game. Yes, we’ve got another first-entry Update Mondays Most Spider-Mans of the Week award winner here.
Candy Crush Soda Saga, Free Updates for King games are pretty much the most boring things in the world to write about. I’m happy they’re always adding new content and so forth, but there are only so many ways for me to say that a game has 15 or 20 new levels, especially when they don’t even mention any potential new gimmicks for those levels. Oh well, the struggles of the weekly updates writer, am I right? Anyway, this one has a new episode with some new levels, and if you’re far enough in the game for that to be relevant, I’m sure you already know that.
Looney Tunes Dash!, Free With this game, I can at least talk about the new characters for the episode that the developers have added. Yes, what’s not to like about cherished childhood favorites like Sylvester the Cat and… Speedy Gonzales. Well, he was in a few cartoons, anyway. Naturally, you’re racing through the streets of the Looney Tunes version of Mexico. So many jokes I could make, all of which would probably just have somebody yelling at me. So let’s just draw one from the Looney Tunes hat… “I musta took a wrong turn at Albuquerque"? Sure, that works. It’s like a metaphor.
Postknight, Free Hunh, this got an update already? Well, that’s cool. Taking a look at the notes, it seems that PostKnight is hopping over the Valentine’s Day holiday and going right for the Blossom Festival. Collect event tokens and trade them for bouquets of flowers to help you with your relationships. Please note: flowers are not actually the be-all end-all answer to your romantic woes. But they sure as heck don’t hurt!
Gangstar Vegas - Mafia action, Free Gangstar Vegas probably doesn’t have a lot of time left on its lease, so to speak, but for the moment, it’s still getting new content added here and there. This update adds some new cars, weapons, Superskills, and UI improvements such as a health bar for vehicles. Gang leaders can now demote their co-leaders which I foresee ending in some big summer tent-pole movie. Well, it’s just about time to head on over to New Orleans anyway.
Subway Surfers, Free Our trusty friends the Subway Surfers are on their way to Arabia this time around. Which I’m not sure is meant to be any specific place? But you know the vibe. Collecting magic lamps, upgrading your magic carpet, getting the new jewel board that looks like it came from the Cave of Wond- hm? Oh, right, probably shouldn’t say the name. Anyway, go out there and make your wishes come true! But only if your wishes involve collecting objects in a behind-the-back runner. Can’t promise anything else, we don’t work in miracles here! Apart from that one time with TWEWY, anyway.
Disney Crossy Road, Free Hoo wow, The Incredibles is almost 13 years old. There’s a sequel coming next year, which I’m quite looking forward to as the first movie was pretty much the best try at a Fantastic Four movie I’ve ever seen. Oh right, this game. Yes, so there are 28 new figures and a new level based on The Incredibles. Most of the new figures are from that film, but 8 of them are from other Disney worlds, so it’s not just a superhero-fest. When every Disney character is in Disney Crossy Road, then no Disney character will be in Disney Crossy Road. That makes no sense. Stop.
Guild of Dungeoneering, $5.99 Thou hast done well in defeating the previous version of the game. Gained 27 experience points and 15 gold pieces. What? Guild of Dungeoneering gained a level! Guild of Dungeoneering is now level 1.4. Gained new expansion “Ice Cream Headaches"! Quests +21! Monsters +30! Classes +3! Learned new mechanic “Favour"! Price increased $1.00!
PewDiePie's Tuber Simulator, Free Pewdiepie loves a lot of things. In that grand list of things, you will surely find the very concept of love itself. Because who doesn’t love love? Love loves love. Even hate loves love. Granted, hate loves love in the sense that it loves to love to hate, so it gets a little complicated. Uh, Valentine’s Day update for Tuber Simulator. That was probably the point I was going for. Lots of bug fixes, plus special items, trends, events, themed objects, and more. Did you know? Love is a stative verb, so the way that McDonalds uses it in their slogan is super-majestically-incorrect from a grammatical point of view. I blame Chandler.
AirAttack 2, Free Here’s another really great update. It was a strong contender for the best this week, actually. This new version adds the option to switch between portrait and landscape orientation, throws in four new Daily Events, support for a variety of iOS controller protocols, and a bunch of extra options. Plus, bug fixes and the ability to listen to your own audio while playing. That’s good stuff! Spray it in your face and slam it!
MOBIUS FINAL FANTASY, Free The event that got Japan to care again about this lavishly-produced social RPG for about a week and a half is finally here for the rest of the world. Yes, the Final Fantasy 7 Remake collaboration event is here, allowing you to team up with Cloud to try and stop the Mako Reactor. This even also brings a new job card, the SOLDIER 1st Class job, and a bunch of new Final Fantasy 7-themed abilities. Look, at the rate Tetsuya Nomura’s games come out, this might be the closest thing you get to playing the Final Fantasy 7 Remake before you retire.
That about wraps it up for last week’s significant updates. I’m sure I’ve missed some, though, so please feel free to comment below and let everyone know if you think something should be mentioned. As usual, major updates will likely get their own news stories throughout this week, and I’ll be back next Monday to summarize and fill in the blanks. Have a great week!
