One of the biggest mysteries surrounding the whole Pokemon GO (Free) phenomenon has been the presence of Ditto within the game. Whether you know Ditto as the jolly, amorphous, transformative blob that is a favorite of many trainers, or if you prefer to use the Pokemon as an egg-creating machine, it has served as a frustrating obstacle for anyone looking to complete their Pokedex within the ultra-popular critter catching simulator. While we found reports that the elusive creature was appearing in the near future, all of a sudden players all around the globe are reporting catching relatively rudimentary Pokemon such as Rattatas and Pidgeys, just to see them transform into Ditto after catching. There’s no explanation to why Ditto has suddenly appeared within Pokemon GO, but it sure is exciting news for anyone looking to get one step closer to completing their Pokedex, and an extra reason to catch some more common Pokemon that you would normally ignore.
As the gif above demonstrates, there’s no indicator that the generic Pokemon you have caught is a Ditto until you have caught it, after which it will quickly transform into its true form. While, like in the main Pokemon series, it will likely not come to define the metagame, Ditto does introduce some interesting gimmicks that will help shake up the action of the game. Within a battle – whether defending or attacking a gym – the Ditto will transform for the duration of the battle into its opponent, copying their Attack and Defense stats, as well as their moves. However, the level of your Ditto will determine the CP that the transformation contains, and not the CP of your opponent. Otherwise, Ditto can be selected as your Buddy Pokemon, taken for walks, levelled up with Ditto candy and caught with the Pokemon GO Plus accessory. While there is no indicator as to why Dittos have suddenly become available within Pokemon GO, even if it has perfectly coincided with the launch of the 3DS games Pokemon Sun and Moon, Ditto will definitely be an interesting addition to any trainer’s roster – just avoid the Ditto on Ditto battles, as it will be a literal struggle to behold.
