For better or for worse, Runeblade (Free) still seems to be the game to play on the Apple Watch if you’re looking for something that closely resembles what you’d actually think of as a video game. If you’ve never played it before, it’s effectively a RPG-themed clicker that has a surprising amount of depth compared to most Apple Watch games. It recently was updated to support the new Watch OS 3, which among other things, included them doing a total rewrite of the game.
It’s got all sorts of new animations and a new UI which generally just seems considerably more fresh and… I guess more of what I imagine a modern Apple Watch game should feel like? With how simple most Apple Watch stuff is, Runeblade stands out way ahead of the pack, which I feel like we’re mentioning every time we post about it. It’s an odd situation as it’s hard to say if Runeblade is just that good that it’s set this high standard or if Apple Watch gaming is so dead that a refresh like this feels more substantial than it would otherwise?
But, regardless of where everything lands on that spectrum, I know more than a few people who are totally obsessed with the game. If you’ve got an Apple Watch and haven’t tried it yet, you should. If you have tried it before, it’s worth checking out this slick new update.
