I guess today is the day to talk about genre-blending games, as another upcoming game has caught my attention that again takes some tried-and-true concepts and mixes them together into a single game. It’s called Defend Your Turf from solo UK developer Stephen Folkes, and it takes the classic beat ’em up genre and peppers in some real-time strategy gameplay. The story is as old as time itself. “A bunch of guys dressed in blue hate another bunch of guys dressed in red… for no apparent reason." I’ll let the humorous trailer for Defend Your Turf do the explaining.
Any game where you can drop cars on peoples’ heads is a winner in my book. And since I’m a games critic I’ll give a bit of help to the predictions in the trailer by saying this looks genre-breaking, superb, and like the most fun I’ve had punching people while doing bits of strategy. Defend Your Turf has taken Folkes “a few years to beat into shape" and seems like a very impressive outing for a solo developer. Best of all is we won’t have to wait long to get our hands on it, as Defend Your Turf is scheduled for release next week on August 23rd. Keep an eye out for it then, and in the meantime check out the forum thread for some discussion.
