This story is about a game with Go in the title, but, surprisingly, it’s not about Pokemon GO (Free); it’s actually about the upcoming Deus Ex Go by Square Enix Montreal, which began the Go trend. Deus Ex Go will be the third in the Go series after Hitman Go ($4.99) and Lara Croft Go ($4.99), and expectations are quite high since the first two were great fun. In a recent interview, Etienne Giroux, Game Designer at Square Enix Montreal, talked about the challenges of bringing the Deus Ex franchise to mobile and of turning it into a Go game. The first important change was of course a switch in the perspective, from first-person to the top-down view familiar to anyone who’s played the other Go games.
The developers wanted a kind of a clean slate for the mobile game because they didn’t want to turn away mobile gamers unfamiliar with the Deus Ex franchise. So, Deux Ex Go will be totally self-contained. At the same time, they wanted to pay respects to the original games, and they did so by including many small details – like camera angles and camera movement along with the overall layout and puzzle design – to help retain the feel of the original.
In order to keep the feel similar, the developers made sure to add hacking, augmentations, and narrative. The hacking mechanic will allow you to use terminals to modify the levels through taking control of enemy turrets for instance. There will also be a narrative and dialogue for the first time in a Go game.
In an important departure from previous Go games, Deus Ex Go will be more sustainable through the frequent addition of new puzzles because the new level creation system the developers are using is much more time-efficient. The new puzzles will be added weekly on a five-day system and will get harder as the weekend approaches. Players will also be able to create their own puzzles, which should ensure longevity. As you can tell, Deus Ex Go sounds like it will be an improvement over the already-great Go games, so I can’t wait to check it out. We don’t have a release date yet, but I hope it’s not too far off.
