I’ve had my eye on the upcoming Star Nomad 2 for quite some time ever since I saw it described on our forums as a “Spacesim + Mount & Blade + FTL Mix," and from that description, I’m sure you can figure out why I was intrigued. The good news is that the game is almost ready for Apple submission, so we’ll finally get to see how it actually plays. The game’s been out on Steam for some time and has a mostly positive rating. The developer said the game is going to be a full port, which is good news. Star Nomad 2 is a dynamic open-world sandbox where you find yourself in the middle of an evolving conflict between three major splinter groups. You can pick what role you want to fulfill in this universe, be that a merchant, a bounty hunter, pirate, miner, smuggler, or wanderer.
According to the developer, your actions carry consequences, and you’ll be playing your part in the rise or fall of empires. There are plenty of random events to keep you engaged, and there are also dynamic economies with logistical supply and demand. Add to that a squad RPG progression via skills, perks, upgrades, and so on, and real time/tactical pause combat, and you can see why the game caught my eye. At the same time, this is an awfully-ambitious game, and I hope the developer managed to pull it off. We liked the original Star Nomad Elite ($1.99), despite its flaws, so hopefully this one will be good too. The game should be coming out soon, so stay tuned.
