Did the PlayStation App Just Add Remote Play Support on iOS? Probably Not, but Maybe Someday

TouchArcade Rating:

We bring this to you with a huge heaping bowl of salt, especially in a world where elaborate fakes can be created in a world of 3D printing and Photoshop. But a YouTube user uploaded a video of their recently-updated PlayStation app (Free) having a Remote Play feature in the app, but with the app being non-functional until they delete and reinstall the app later on, with the feature disabled, though a second video was recorded showing the same situation. Again, be very skeptical, as it wouldn’t be impossible to fake this through a web page shortcut or fake sideloaded app, but there are a few interesting reasons to discuss this.

The thing is, this isn’t exactly implausible to happen someday. Even on a technical level, Sony Android phones already have Remote Play as an option, there’s nothing stopping other devices from getting this functionality. On Apple devices, it could be an issue with branding – who would budge between Sony having a non-PlayStation controller work with games on iOS and Apple allowing a DualShock to work with an iOS app? But it makes sense for Sony to want to expand their Remote Play functionality, especially as they just expanded it on to PC. The Vita’s current state is, well, not great, Bob, but the feature still has interest and value. Heck, their business is quite clearly positioning itself for the inevitable consoles-are-dead future with the Gaikai acquisition a few years back and the PlayStation Now streaming service being in operation.

There’s no reason why the PlayStation app couldn’t someday be a hub for people to play games streamed to their phone, tablet, or TV box. In fact, I think very highly that will be the future. But is the future right now? This seems more like a wishful fake, but it’s not crazy to think Remote Play won’t be on iOS someday.
