One of the best and most important games in iOS history, Superbrothers Sword and Sworcery EP ($3.99), just turned 5 today. It’s an utter classic, and if you haven’t played it, then you really, really should – it’s a stunning artistic achievement, features amazing sound and music, and manages to create a captivating and emotional experience with minimal dialogue. And this is all on a game that was on iOS first – desktop players got it eventually, but the game was made and meant for mobile, even using device rotation as part of the game. While we haven’t seen much from artist Superbrothers since then (The Verge caught up to his whereabouts), Capy Games has gone on to make some other cool games, with this kind of being the springboard to other great things.
If you still haven’t played this seminal classic and part of the mobile gaming canon, you can do so for $1.99 for the universal app. It’s been on sale before, but you should pick it up no matter what. Especially if you came into mobile gaming late, and enjoy experiences like Monument Valley ($3.99), this was Monument Valley before ustwo was making games. This holds a special place in my heart, and you’ll dig it too. And if you enjoy Jim Guthrie’s soundtrack, it’ll be re-pressed on vinyl in April.
