Among the bucket of games we saw today was Rival Gears, a game which on the box might seem like a pretty standard free to play racer. Getting a little deeper, it has some really cool mechanics which makes it stand out from the pack. First off, instead of CSR-style minimal gameplay, the racing mechanics are an interesting blend between feeling like a racing game and feeling like a lane-based runner which you can easily see in the video:
What really has me curious is how the in-game economy is going to work out. As things are planned now, things are going to be totally different from typical F2P games where you are working towards upgrading things which are effectively trapped inside of your own game. In Rival Gears, you’ll be able to tweak out a car and sell it to other players, potentially even commanding a pretty decent in-game price if they’ve got a particularly rare or cool car. I’m not sure how it’s going to work out, as that’s really throwing a wrench into the free to play loop.
Either way, as far as the spectator sport of watching how the App Store goes, I’m really excited to see how this all pans out when it eventually launches. Keep your eye on the forums, as mentioned in the video, they’re looking for beta testers soon.
