Exploding Kittens ($4.99) has been quite the phenomenon after blowing up (pun intended) Kickstarter and becoming the most-backed game in Kickstarter history when it came out as well as the campaign with the most number of backers. When it finally made the jump to mobile in January, the game looked really good but only had local multiplayer, to the disappointment of many. Fear not, though, because from today you can blow up innocent kitties across the world since the game finally has online multiplayer. The way they implemented the multiplayer side of the game is quite simple but quite smart too; you can, of course, play online with random players, but you can also organize private games.
The way the private games work is someone sets up the game and then the game gives the host a code which she can then share with others through Facebook Messenger, iMessage, or any other sharing app you have on your phone. I’ve tried both modes and they work fine. If you don’t know much about the game, it’s a card game where your main goal is to avoid getting an Exploding Kitten card in your hand if you don’t a card that defuses it. All the other cards in the deck help you move, mitigate, or avoid the Exploding Kitten. Just remember that the game is iPhone only.
The website describes the game as a kitty-powered version of Russian Roulette, but truth is it has a bit more strategy than that. The game also has a really fun visual style with The Oatmeal‘s art really making the game stand out. So, if the lack of online player was a deal-breaker for you, you don’t have a reason not to blow up kitties anymore.
