When it comes to gaming on the Apple Watch, there’s one type of game that can work well; social, multiplayer type games. Mafia Watch (Free), a game by N3TWORK made specifically for the Apple Watch, has been built to take advantage of the Watch’s notifications and multiplayer potential. In order to make Mafia Watch as good as it could be, the company brought in Takeshi Otsuka, who is responsible for Kaito Royale, one of the most popular DeNA games. He helped N3TWORK weave a PVP Collect + Protect mechanic into the heart of this social RPG and helped the company create a game that players can interact with many times a day as they fight to complete jobs with or against players. In this game you battle your way up the organization to become the Don (hopefully you’re forced to use Marlon Brando’s voice too), fight along your mafia brothers against other players to advance up the ranks, and collect and protect all the things necessary in your journey to be as bad as you can be.
The game utilizes the Apple Watch notifications to tell you what’s going on in the game; you’ll get taps that let you know when there’s a new job, a target in range, a revenge request, and so on. The game boasts hundreds of jobs, characters, and weapons, PvP battles (hopefully you won’t have to throw your Watch at them), Co-op gameplay, and even the ability to send mocking messages to foes through Siri. I’m interested to see how Apple’s new device can open new gameplay spaces and how companies will take advantage of the device’s capabilities. The game’s out now and it’s free, so go be the Mafia Don you’ve always dreamed of being.
