Back in July, I wrote about the upcoming Pathfinder Adventure Card Game (PACG) by Obsidian Entertainment, a game that looked very intriguing to me even though I haven’t played the physical game or any other Pathfinder-related games. The game was supposed to come out Fall 2015, but in a Paizo blog today, we got word that the game won’t be coming out until early 2016. Before you get all disappointed by this delay, know that according to the blog, this delay will result in a much better game. Apparently, when the project got underway, the developers wanted to initially bring a limited version of the game to iOS – enough so you could play through the Base deck of Rise of the Runelords – but quickly realized that a three-scenario game wouldn’t really do well if released. So, as development continued, they continued adding more pieces and increasing the game’s scope.
That brings us to the launch delay; apparently all those additions will make for a much better launch that will include ways to experience PACG in new ways. While the blog doesn’t divulge what these new ways will be (not to spoil the surprise, I suppose), the writer does give us some idea of how the physical game has changed in its translation to digital (from the mechanics to the art) and also a few examples of cards unique to the digital game. I’m always for developers only letting a game out the door when it’s ready, and it sounds like the delay will be worth it. I think those who’ve played the physical game will be excited with this news because it means the physical and the digital PACG will feel different enough to worth double-dipping. Stay tuned for more details once we have some.
