Wargaming.net has come up with a great tournament idea for its World of Tanks: Blitz (Free) and it involves regions of the world fighting against each other. Most multiplayer games like WOT Blitz split their players across regions because of server and lag issues. While this is a technical necessity for most games, it also splinters the community because you can’t play on two servers with the same collection of tanks (or cards, or heroes, etc). The Rise of Continents Tournament lets players from the game’s four regions – North America, Asia, Europe, and Russia – compete against each other without actually crossing server lines. Each region has a set of goals each week that all players on that server are playing towards. As your region reaches those goals, players in the server earn in-game and physical rewards.
In-game rewards include Premium Days and gold while the physical rewards consist of 240 pairs of Sennheiser headsets. The tournament will commence on September 28th and will run for 4 weeks, and points will be tallied both at the end of each week and the end of the event. In order to participate, you need to have 20 days of activity during the tournament and a minimum of 100 battles (I’m at 2000 battles, I think I’m good). If you want to play in the tournament, all you have to do is log in to the game once the tournament starts. I like Wargaming.net’s idea quite a bit; it’s a smart way to help a game’s global community feel less fragmented. Maybe other multiplayer games will follow.
