Have the console wars begun? As Jeff Scott (@TheAppivore) writes over at Slide To Play, Apple let slip that Disney Infinity 3.0 Edition is under development for Apple TV and iOS, and this edition will be the whole shebang, not a “streamlined" mobile version with half the features missing. When Disney listed iOS and Android as supported platforms for Disney Infinity 3.0 back when it first announced the game, Jeff wrote about his hopes that 3.0 would pull a Skylanders and bring the base and the physical characters to mobile. Apparently, Jeff has Disney’s ear as John Vignocchi, Vice President of Production for Disney Interactive, announced yesterday that the full Disney Infinity 3.0 Edition console experience will be available on the new Apple TV later this year.
The game will be available through a special Apple TV starter pack which will include the Anakin Skywalker and Ahsoka Tano figures, a new MFi controller, and a wireless Disney Infinity 3.0 bluetooth base. Apparently, this starter pack will be very similar to the one sold for consoles. I’m starting to think that people who thought Apple TV can be a real thorn on the sides of traditional consoles might have had a point. Apple TV is a pretty beefy piece of hardware and has the advantage of having the ear of many consumers who are already part of the iOS ecosystem. As more big publishers come Apple’s way, Apple TV will become an even more attractive all-in-one box and will definitely threaten the more “specialized" gaming consoles. At least that’s my guess; we’ll see how it will all turn out. If you want to read more details about Disney Infinity 3.0, head over to Scott’s Slide To Play.
