Remember Skulls of the Shogun (Free), the really good strategy game that languished in Microsoft’s prisons before coming to the iOS in 2013? Well, Nerdist apparently does, which is why the company decided to create a cartoon series based on the game’s funny characters. If you haven’t played the game, Skulls of the Shogun has you leading your skull-tipped army across various levels in both singleplayer and multiplayer, using your infantry, archers, and cavalry to fight your enemies all the while eating their twice-dead skulls for extra power ups. Our own Mr. Musgrave gave it a 5-star seal of approval, calling it a terrific, stylish game. I suppose Nerdist decided to go with this franchise because of its inherently-peculiar premise (silly-looking dead Samurai clashing and eating each other) and also because it hasn’t been so popular as to feel already-worn as an idea.
The series will consist of weekly episodes releasing every Tuesday until September 8. The show stars John DiMaggio (of Futurama and Adventure Time fame), and is written and directed by F. Ryan Naumman. The series starts pretty much like the game starts, with General Akamoto dying in battle and finding himself continuing to battle in the afterlife; however, he decides not to wait in line like all the other dead soldiers and, instead, builds up his own army to lead once more. The first episode of the series, which you can see above, is nicely animated and quite entertaining. Now I wonder what the next game-to-cartoon will be; Furdemption could work, and so would Tiny Thief. Any better ideas?
