About a year ago, AMC and Next Games announced that a new mobile game built around the fantastic Walking Dead TV show was in the works. According to Next’s CEO, Teemy Huuhtanen, the company’s approach was to stay true to the show’s main themes like survival strategies, finding safety for the people in your party, making difficult decisions, and fighting the walkers. The game would have both hand-to-hand combat and strategic puzzles. The game’s description on the official website definitely tries to touch on the themes Huuhtanen mentions, like the struggle to stay human in a world filled with death, the challenge of setting up a camp that can protect and sustain your people, and so on. The game’s locations are also taken right out of the show, with Terminus and the Prison making their appearance on the game’s map.
The gameplay trailer has a very intense Daryl setting the very dramatic scene of a horrible world with no warm showers and no fast food joints; no wonder many just gave up and took the easy way out. The actual gameplay looks fun but predictable, with plenty of face-smashing and gut-shooting. Overall, it looks like a typical turn-based game, but I think its claim to glory will be how the zombie hordes can overwhelm your people, which will demand a different strategic tempo. We can also see what appears to be base-building mechanics, but it’s hard to tell how much of your time that part of the game will take. Does the trailer get you more or less excited about this game?
