Whether you love Square Enix or hate them, you have to admit that they’re behind some of the best premium RPGs on the App Store. They’ve got so many of them up, in fact, that while they have frequent sales, if you’re waiting for any one game in particular, you might be waiting a while. Take, for example, Dragon Quest 8. It’s been out for a year and a half, and it’s only been on sale a couple of times. Well, if you were waiting for its number to come up again, you’re in luck. That game, along with a couple of other cool Square Enix RPGs, is on sale for a limited time. Here’s the full list, along with links for reviews and/or RPG Reloads where appropriate:
DRAGON QUEST VIII, $19.99 Review Excerpt: “Dragon Quest 8 on iOS isn’t quite up to the original English PS2 game, thanks to a lack of voice acting and some technical issues, but it is a largely faithful version of one of the best RPGs of the last decade. It’s a grand adventure that no JRPG fan should miss, as long as your device can run it. Here’s hoping this return is a successful one."
Secret of Mana, $7.99 RPG Reload Excerpt: “It might not be as good as you remember it, but it’s still a fun, beautiful game in its own right. At times it’s like 20 pounds of mud in a 10 pound sack, but that creakiness is perhaps part of its charm."
FINAL FANTASY TACTICS :WotL, $13.99 RPG Reload Excerpt: “We’ll probably never get another strategy RPG with Matsuno’s unique flavor of storytelling and fondness for intricate sub-systems. Final Fantasy Tactics needs to stand as a testament to his unique design sense, which is fortunately a job it’s more than up to. It’s an awesome game to lose yourself in, again and again.".
FINAL FANTASY TACTICS, $15.99 RPG Reload Excerpt: ."This method of using a very personal story to ground a plot almost too big to keep track of is one of Yasumi Matsuno’s most well-known tricks, and it works like a charm here. For all the crazy things that happen in between, the story only occasionally shifts focus from Ramza and Delita. Even in the end, everything comes back to their relationship."
As far as I can tell, both versions of Final Fantasy Tactics and Secret Of Mana are on sale until August 18th. There’s no indication of how long Dragon Quest 8 will be on sale for, so if you’re interested, you’ll probably want to grab that sooner rather than later. If there are any other stragglers that go on sale, I’ll update this post. For now, it looks like a small but sweet sale.
