When Baldur’s Gate: Enhanced Edition ($9.99) went universal and was finally playable on the iPhone, a lot of people cheered. Sure, it was a bit on the small side, but you could change the font size, zoom in, and still get a really great RPG experience. Those cheers lasted about 20 or so minutes until someone realized that if you minimized either of the sidebars, the icon to retrieve them was almost completely off-screen. The only way to get them back was to mess around with your device’s accessibility settings and zoom in on the pixels like you were Horatio Caine investigating security camera footage. Only then could you pull the bars back out of hiding and keep on playing. Until the next time you accidentally minimized them, anyway.

Then, when iOS 8.3 hit and tightened up security on accessing application files, another problem came up. You could no longer transfer your Baldur’s Gate characters to Baldur’s Gate 2 ($9.99), which sucks all the fun out of losing all of your awesome gear at the beginning of the sequel so that you aren’t breaking the game’s balance with your +3.5 Sword Of Carter Dotsoning. I suppose this was the last straw, as Overhaul Games has finally issued a patch that takes care of these problems and more.

The sidebar minimizing issue has been completely fixed, and you can now easily export characters and save data. The crashing issue that came up when you tried to join multiplayer games has been dealt with, along with a couple of other smaller bugs. Some text has been fixed for accuracy, and a few new tricks have been added to the UI to make things work a little better, such as being able to double-tap to buy large quantities of items at once. With all of these fixes, Baldur’s Gate provides a much smoother experience than it did before, especially for iPhone players.
