It’s now a widely-accepted fact that Scott Cawthon, developer of the Five Nights at Freddy’s ($2.99)…(what’s the right word now) game, jump-scare creation machine, cultural phenomenon, etc, is our current overlord. Going purely from what I witness in my daily life, the last time I’ve heard kids under 14 talk about a game with such reverence and passion was Minecraft. With a fourth installment coming in a few months and with Warner Bros signing on to create a feature adaptation, the future’s looking bright (or dark and full of terrors) for Scott Cawthon’s animatronic babies.
Yesterday we got a taste of what a FNAF‘s film might look like when Typhoon Cinema and Deviant Picture Films picked Spingtrap to star in Death Scene Springtrap – 2 Evil Eyes, a short film based on the plot of the game series. While Warner Bros has stated that its feature adaptation will be “insane, terrifying and weirdly adorable," the creators of this short film definitely decided to avoid any “adorableness" and go straight for terrifying. Springtrap is animated in such a way that he looks simultaneously uncannily human and yet monstrous. The short film is expertly lit and framed, and it manages to perfectly distill the game’s plot and atmosphere. What do you think? Is this how you imagine the game to look on the big screen, or would you rather have the “adorable" version that, fortunately or unfortunately, seems to be coming our way soon?
