When Desktop Dungeons (DD) was originally released as a paid game in 2013 (it existed as a freeware game prior to this release), it quickly found a place on many PC screens because of its addictive one-more-dungeon gameplay and its very challenging and intricate design. DD‘s developers, QCF Design, have been planning on bringing the game to mobile platforms for quite some time. Finally, that day is drawing near as DD has been updated to the Enhanced Edition on the PC, which means the mobile version of the game will be releasing at some point in May.
If you’ve never heard of the game, DD is a one-level roguelike that lets you pit an endless stream of disposable heroes against numerous enemies with various skills. While this description makes the game sound like a run-of-the-mill roguelike, DD‘s design is much more complex than that, which is why it has many devoted fans. After the initial release of the game, the developers decided to release an Enhanced Edition of DD as a free update to the PC client and as a separate mobile game. The developers had been planning a simultaneous release of the Enhanced Edition to PC and mobile, and while the PC version is out, they had to delay the mobile version until May because of some issues with Apple’s 64-bit demands.
The mobile version of the game will be introducing some fun new features along with a UI specifically designed for touch devices. Among other features, there will be Daily Challenges that will allow you and your friends to tackle seeded adventures (rather than the random dungeons one encounters in DD‘s normal mode). The best part of the mobile version will be its cloud support as DD will fully support cloud saving that will sync your saves across the various platforms, which means you can delay your certain death on your desktop by pausing the game and then meeting your demise on your tablet screen. Keep an eye out, then, for a game that’s perfectly suited for the quick play-sessions of mobile gaming, even if it has the word “desktop" in its title.
