Nexon and developer Socialspiel have just announced Legacy Quest, a roguelike dungeon-crawler coming this summer. While the term ‘roguelike’ is definitely one that’s loosening from its Berlin definition, at least Legacy Quest is keeping a couple key elements: permadeath of heroes and procedurally-generated dunegons. Combat will be real-time, and the experience you earn will go toward upgrading future heroes to make them better-equipped towards tackling future challenges, along with the ability to craft newer and better weapons. Customized items that players have will become collectible items in the game world that other players can even pick up.
Seeing a notable free-to-play publisher like Nexon tackle the roguelike genre in some capacity is an interesting move – I feel like there should have been more games like what Legacy Quest is trying to do by now since roguelikes are so highly replayable. This will be interesting to see how this works out as a free-to-play game, of course, but it could wind up being something really cool.
