First-Order Games, founded by an ex-AAA developer going indie, has revealed their first game, Swipey Rogue. The title seems to be exactly what the game is going for: roguelike-inspired gameplay with swipe controls. In particular, you have auto-running, and levels that you have to try and defeat as quickly as possible. The game is more roguelike-inspired, particularly from grid-based games than anything as the levels are designed instead of procedurally-generated, but given that “roguelike" has become a catchall term to describe many games, I suppose this isn’t a terrible violation of what “roguelikes" are supposed to be. But this video shows off some of what to expect:
Each room has multiple enemies to defeat, traps to avoid, loot to collect, and an exit to reach. There’s a three-star objective system where each objective can be earned separately – the speedrun star and the “kill all enemies" star may be impossible to get simultaneously! This seems like an interesting mix of styles, and with over 200 levels of one-hand-friendly action, could be a good on-the-go game. The current expected release date is sometime this spring, so keep an eye on the forum thread for the game.
