Adult Swim Games and PikPok have a new game coming out on Thursday, October 2nd, called Adventure Xpress. This is their entry into the match-3 RPG field, as players control a delivery person in a world where mail carriers are attacked frequently by bandits and other miscreants. But these mail carriers fight back by way of matching gems to hit their enemies, charging up spells, and using the various elemental advantages to try and come out ahead in battle. There are of course upgrades and new items to buy, as this is an RPG, and the game will be free-to-play.
Those aforementioned elemental effects play a big role in the combat, as matching a certain color of blocks can do more or less damage depending on the enemy’s elemental alignment, and those colors can also help power up the aforementioned magic spells in battle. The game is level-based with multiple consecutive battles to win, and the grid in each level having a different layout.
A lot of this is standard match-3 RPG stuff, and the genre has become so popular because there’s a lot that can be done with the mix of randomized puzzle mechanics and RPG tropes. But Adult Swim and PikPok are at least making one that has fluid animation and a great feel to the controls. Plus, if you’re tired of match-3 games where you have to make a match to make a move – good news, this one lets you swap any two gems on your turn, match or no match. The game drops worldwide on Thursday.
