Curious Media is a prolific developer on many platforms, mostly focusing on licensed IP work. However, they're anxious to work on some of their own creations, one of which is Phil the Pill which is heading to iOS later this year. It's a puzzler sort of like Pac-Man where you direct your pill bug down lanes and through barriers, collecting coins and rescuing your pill bug buddies. A constant threat of stinkbug stinky-ness creeps up from the bottom, keeping you on your toes as you play. Check out the hands-on video.

Despite the plethora of puzzlers on iOS, Phil the Pill is actually a lot of fun. There's even a whole bunch of backstory explaining Phil the Pill and his battle against an invading Stinkbug, and of course the little dancing pill bugs at the end of each level are super adorable. Curious Media will be running a Kickstarter next week to hopefully get the funding needed to finish off Phil the Pill, so check that out and look for the game to hit sometime in the second half of 2014.

In August of last year, Vivid Games announced a new 3rd-person action adventure game based in Greek Mythology called Godfire: Rise of Prometheus. The screens they released looked great, and the following month Vivid teased us with a brief trailer, which only made us even more eager to get our hands on Godfire. Well, that was kind of a long time ago, and we haven't really seen much about Godfire in the months since then. However, today Vivid has released a brand new trailer showing off the combat in Godfire. Check it out.

I was able to meet with Vivid here at GDC, and while they weren't quite ready for us to capture our own video of Godfire, I was able to spend a decent amount of time playing through a couple of demo levels in the game, and I really, really enjoyed it. Many people suspected that Godfire was some sort of Infinity Blade-alike, but that's not accurate. In between the combat you're roaming the land and finding treasure in a pretty typical fashion, using a virtual joystick to move wherever you want to go.

Once you enter an area and enemies descend on you, it switches into a more restricted movement mode. Here your character will sort of "lock on" to an enemy, and you have the ability to dive and roll to dodge attacks or just position yourself behind that enemy to be able to land some blows. The enemy AI is quite competent, and they'll frequently use their shields to block attacks meaning you have to be a bit more strategic when trying to take them down. However, this is still very much a button mashing affair, and with all the cool combos your character can perform it makes the combat feel extremely satisfying. There's also a really nice weapon and armor upgrading system with all types of wicked armors and blades to equip, which actually change the look of your in-game character. Oh, and that big boss fight you see towards the end of the teaser above? I played that guy too and yeah, that was intense.

Godfire: Rise of Prometheus is shaping up really nicely. Look for it to launch sometime in Q2 of 2014, and check out our forums for more discussion on the game.

Get Set Games is pretty popular on the iOS and Android platforms with such hits as Mega Jump and Mega Run, and talking with them at GDC in years past it's really clear they're brimming with cool game ideas. One type of game they've always wanted to create is a dual-stick shooter, so they're going for it with their newest creation called Battle Casters. We dive into a pretty early version of Battle Casters in the video below, check it out.

Even in its early state, Battle Casters is a whole lot of fun. Blasting away at bad guys and collecting loot is really satisfying. One thing I wasn't prepared to like so much about it is the timer element. Each run is limited time only, so there's a neat risk/reward between wanting to explore every nook and cranny or trying to hurry along so you can finish a floor. The comparison to arcade racers like Out Run that give you additional time as long as you can make it to each checkpoint of a course is very apt, and it works surprisingly well in a dungeon crawler setting.

Battle Casters should be out in April, and knowing Get Set they'll probably have a lot more content to come even after release.

While super difficult, fast-reaction arcade games are nothing new, it feels like ever since Terry Cavanagh's Super Hexagon hit the scene the genre has gained prominence, even earning its own classification called "twitch games." Long-time iOS developer Acceleroto has their own brand of twitch game coming up called Unpossible, and it's absolutely awesome. It feels something like a mix between Impossible Road and Super Hexagon, and sees you barreling down a tube and rotating around its surface to avoid approaching objects. Sounds simple enough on paper, but like its name alludes to, Unpossible is a serious challenge.

Where Unpossible really shines is in its excellent randomly generated levels and silky-smooth framerate. The cool, glowy visuals don't hurt either. Best of all is that Acceleroto is hoping to cater to a broad audience, offering three different difficulty modes that all feel quite different from each other and even a zen-like free playing mode where you can't die but can just enjoy the ride or get some practice in. Playing Unpossible is a total rush, and I think both twitch game aficionados and more casual players will find something to love when it launches in the next month or so. Also, if you like the look of Unpossible, you might enjoy checking out some early images and concept art posted on Acceleroto's blog.

The arrival of the iPad has revolutionized many classic gaming pastimes. One example would be board games. While not a complete replacement for physically rolling dice and moving pieces across a board, it sure is convenient to be able to take many board games with you wherever you go, all stored neatly in digital form on your iPad. No pieces to worry about losing, no fuss and no muss. The same can be said about physical jigsaw puzzles. While snapping tiny cardboard pieces together will always have a satisfaction that's hard to match in digital form, the iPad should be a great way to enjoy a jigsaw puzzle experience without the clunkiness of physical pieces.

Well, Ravensburger are legendary in the world of both board games and puzzles, and they've done an excellent job bringing the board game experience to the iOS platform over the years. Now they're ready to do the same with jigsaw puzzles with their upcoming Ravensburger Puzzle app for iPad. It's pretty much what you might expect–a digital hub to host a wide collection of digital puzzles. What stands out about Ravensburger Puzzle is its numerous features and options that make it easy to tailor the experience to suit your taste. Check out our hands-on video where we take Ravensburger Puzzle for a spin.

The iPad is a perfect place for digitized jigsaw puzzles, and there are plenty of jigsaw puzzle games on the App Store, but none of them have really felt like a killer app in the genre. I think Ravensburger Puzzle has nailed it though. In talking with them during GDC, I was interested to learn that they'd been working on a jigsaw puzzle game for some time but had issues getting it just right. They'd built an engine with complex physics and fully 3D puzzle pieces that could be manipulated by the player any way they saw fit, but it just didn't feel good.

In the end, fancy physics complicated the experience, and it wasn't until they scaled things back that Ravensburger Puzzle finally "fit into place" (sorry I couldn't help myself). In this case, less was more, and offering a clean interface that was easy to manage and let players simply place pieces where they needed to go worked out best in the end. I also really love the amount of options in the game, like choosing how many pieces you want a puzzle to be and watching your puzzle's image be "cut" into individual shapes right before your eyes. The hint system is also well done, allowing players to use various levels of assistance should they want to.

It really is nicely done, so if you're a jigsaw puzzle fan and iPad owner, check out Ravensburger Puzzle when it launches on March 27th.

Drifter is a game we've been looking at since GDC 2012, following a successful Kickstarter and Steam Green Light campaign, the game is closer than ever to being done. The developers are still solidly in "When it's done" mode, but they're thinking it'll be done later this year. With so much talk of the PC version, it's neat to see the iOS version actually running:

The trick with games like Drifter is that you do so much in them it's hard to just show what the game does in a quick ten minute demo. Regardless, as someone who loves space traders, I can't wait for this one.

If you remember earlier this month I posted a trailer for a new game called Star Horizon, a visually-stunning on-rails space shooter from Tabasco Interactive. If you missed that trailer, go check it out now. Seriously, I'll wait. All done? Ok good, because Star Horizon is set to launch later this week, and today the developers have released another new trailer, this time a hands-on video of how the game is actually played using both the normal touchscreen controls and an iOS 7 controller. Check it out.

Star Horizon continues to look impressive, and I really can't wait to get my own hands on it and take it for a test flight. It's scheduled for a March 20th release, which means it should pop up on Wednesday night here in the US App Store alongside all the other new releases, and it'll cost you $3.99 with no in-app purchases.

We're not big into previewing many of these kind of timer-based multi-currency free to play games, but Here Be Monsters seems neat because it includes everything. You like crafting? They got it. Collecting, trapping monsters, fishing, tweaking out your homestead? They got it. They're billing it as a "light MMO" and while it might really not appeal to the gamer-y crowd of TA, it's neat to see how expansive these games are getting.

This should be our last video with crazy audio, sorry about that again.

It's playable now as a Facebook game, with an iOS version coming shortly.

Word games are a perfect fit for mobile, and Tower Studios' upcoming Word Explorer even seems fit for the jet-setting lifestyle of a mobile gamer. Or, if you're a more sedentary mobile gamer like me, it can at least simulate the feeling of jetting all over the world. Its extensive list of puzzles are based on locations all over the globe, and you'll travel all over as you work towards completing them. The game has an uncanny amount of word puzzles to solve as well as real photos of animals and locations from around the world for you to collect. With little factoids associated with each image, you might even learn something by playing. Check out our lengthy look at Word Explorer.

Word Explorer seems to have all the bases covered to cater towards a wide audience of word game fans. There are un-timed easier modes so you can solve puzzles at your own pace, or harder timed modes where you're under the gun to solve puzzles and earn the highest rewards. It even has randomly generated quick play games and an online versus mode. With a massive amount of words and locations all over the world to visit, Word Explorer should keep you plenty busy when it launches in the next couple of weeks. Additionally, if you've got a Canadian App Store account you can check out the soft-launch version right now.

They're great tilt games, and the sequel is turning in to something super awesome, particularly with the upcoming Brimstone Pinball mode update which takes a power up from the original game mode and blows it out in to a full game mode on its own. GDC is extra noisy today, so the audio isn't great, but you get the idea:

Seattle-based Signal Studios is at GDC showing off their upcoming platformer The Sleeping Prince. Before we got into our demo, I was fully expecting a completely different game. I mean, I see a cutesy art style and a game about a royal family, and it's a free to play title, so I instantly expected some sort of city builder. Man was I ever wrong. The Sleeping Prince is actually a platformer, and seeing as the main character is asleep, it's your job to fling the poor fellow through each of the levels, ragdoll style. It's silly and a whole lot of fun. Check it out.

As we mentioned in our video, The Sleeping Prince is currently soft-launched in Australian and New Zealand App Stores, and should be seeing a worldwide release at the end of April. If you're in either of those soft-launch territories, you can hit up this link to download the game yourself. For everyone else, keep an eye out for The Sleeping Prince towards in the coming weeks. It's awesome.

If your favorite level of Call of Duty involves raining death from an AC-130, Gunship X is another game on the App Store that'll be right up your alley. It's sort of crazy just how similar it is to Zombie Gunship [$0.99], but it is developed by some of the same people who had their hands in the original game. The similarities, at least on the surface, are pretty obvious:

Gunship X is almost done, and slated to be released "April-ish". It's going to be a free to play game with an "ethical" free to play model, so we'll see how agreeable the IAP is when it launches.
