The TouchArcade Show - 226 - Maglor Speaks!

October 9th, 2015 8:00 PM EST by Eli Hodapp in Podcast

LogoThis is an exciting episode, despite lacking both Jared who is on his honeymoon and Mike Meade who was sleeping. Carter Dotson is playing the part of Jared, spending most of the podcast watching baseball while I drill Ryan "Ryan Noodlecake" Holowaty on all things Noodlecake. We start the show out with a letter from the mysteriously absent Maglor, and spend the rest of the podcast discussing all of the neat things about Noodlecake. It's a little more developer and business oriented than our podcast typically are, but, I think there's a lot of cool stuff in there regardless.

It's the time of the month once again for merriment and wonder with Eric Ford, Andy Fretz, and yours truly on the RPG Reload Podcast. This month, our featured game is Wizardry: Labyrinth Of Lost Souls, but we spend just as much time talking about the series in general as we do about this particular installment. Between that, the Tokyo Game Show, a lot of Order & Chaos 2 talk, and a fun listener question, we ended up running just about two hours again. Well, hey, we're monthly, so just pretend it's a 30 minute podcast every week and it might not seem so grotesquely long. Things get a wee bit Canadian at the end, I'm afraid. Sorry about that!..

LogoJared is getting married this weekend, and will be vanishing from TouchArcade for the next week and a half while he does various honeymoon activities. So, strap in for the last podcast featuring the bearded one as a bachelor. Anyway, this episode starts off with some reader emails and then we hop right in to discussing the Apple TV via the hands on we posted of my time with the Nvidia Shield. From there, we discuss a few games like Mos Speedrun 2 [$1.99] and Shooty Skies [Free]. It's a good time, I promise, and it seems Mike Meade got attacked by bees at the end of the show as he gets a little buzzy.

LogoToday is the big day, the new iPhone is here. I already posted a first impressions piece, but we discuss waiting in line for electronics then similarly go over what makes the iPhone 6S so neat. From there, we switch gears to talking about the Bioshock drama and just how long you should expect a game to be supported for. Following that, we take a quick dive in to two games: Land Sliders [Free] and PewDiePie: Legend of the Brofist [$4.99].

LogoWe made up for the no game chat last week with an extra jam-packed game-isode this week. We kick things off with some iOS 9 chat, which apparently I was the only one who bothered to install it. From there, I go crazy over Wonky Ship [Free], wasn't so wild about Swap Cops [Free], while Jared was in love with Diver Dash [Free]. I fan out over Prettygreat's upcoming Land Sliders, even though I'm not super sure I'm supposed to be talking about it. Oh, then we talk about how great Stranded: Mars One [Free] is, along with Call of Champions [Free] and Starseed: Origin [$0.99]. Last, but certainly not least, is the discussion of the drama of the week.

LogoOn this week's episode of The TouchArcade Show, we primarily focus on the two major events this week. First off, what a total, unbelievably bummer it is that EA removed Flight Control from the App Store along with the implications of trying to deal with legacy software on iOS. Once we made our peace with amazing games vanishing potentially forever we shifted gears to talk about everything that happened at this week's keynote and what we think of it all. If you want to follow along, Jared posted a great roundup of everything that happened earlier this week.

Okay, so we went way over our target time again on this episode of the RPG Reload Podcast, but that's only because we unintentionally sub-featured another game along the way. The main topic of this episode is Mage Gauntlet from Rocketcat Games, but we also spend a pretty long time talking about The World Ends With You, as well. Joining Eric Ford and me this month is good old Andy Fretz, once again calling in from floor B25 of TouchArcade Towers. We get a bit sillier than usual in this one, but it's all the name of good fun. Er, unless you're famed voice actor Cam Clarke, in which case, I sincerely apologize...

195525_largerWe kick off this week's episode with a long discussion on the relative low interest of the original Sphero toy and the off the charts explosion caused by the release of their BB-8 toy. I guess that's just the magic of the Star Wars brand at work. From there, we answer a couple emails and move on to talking about a ton of games. The Deer God [$9.99], Power Ping Pong [$4.99], Don't Starve: Pocket Edition [$2.99], Electro Ball [Free] are all in there, along with another mention of the fantastic Sage Solitaire [Free].

LogoThis weekend is PAX in Seattle, and this podcast was recorded live from my hotel room, using my headphones' in-line microphone sooo... Audio quality is just alright at best. Either way, we talk about the phenomenon that is PAX pin trading, another Oculus Rift demo, yet another Apple TV gaming rumor, and a few iOS games. Those games specifically were Sage Solitaire [Free], Lara Croft GO [$4.99] and Ski Safari 2 [$1.99]. Also, no Mobcrush stream (or YouTube archive) this week as... Well, hotel internet.

913168_largerThis week's episode of The TouchArcade Show starts out with the requisite iTunes reviews and listener emails, including hearing from someone who still uses a flip phone and rocks an iPad. Looking at how much I pay every month for smartphone cellular service, this is starting to feel more and more reasonable. From there, we move on to discussing our origin stories of sorts from another email. Oh, and when we start talkin' games, we chat about Final Fantasy VII [$15.99], Pac-Man 256 [Free], Horizon Race [Free], Burger - The Game [Free], and some soft launched clicker I still don't know the full name of.

913168_largerWe had another week with a ton of email, so again the first half of the podcast was dedicated to discussing it. A reader asked us questions about Clash of Clans [Free], then we had a query about the app and t-shirts, along with some other stuff. From there, we shifted gears to discussing a bit of Monsters Ate My Metropolis [Free], a tiny bit of Hearthstone [Free], with the bulk of the time going to the upcoming Pac-Man 256, which is working out to be an amazing game. Oh, and we discuss a couple books along with the crazy parallels between self publishing a book and self publishing a iOS game. The two books discussed as The Martian and Wool.

089574_largerThis week's podcast discussion was kicked off by a couple great emails, the first which sent us on a pretty lengthy discussion surrounding graphical fidelity of iOS games sort of feeling like it stopped progressing as quickly following the release of Infinity Blade [$5.99]. From there, we hopped to another email asking about great portrait mode games, which resulted in a real long discussion on Sling Kong [Free] along with a hasty list of other great games. We also fan out over Spider: Rite of the Shrouded Moon [$2.99] and then briefly discuss some of the news of the week.

Hello, everyone! We're right in the middle of the dog days of summer, and what better way to beat the heat than laying in front of a fan or air conditioner and listening to an ultra-long episode of the RPG Reload Podcast? This month, Eric Ford and I are joined by a special guest. His name is Eric "RK" Koziol, and in addition to being an iOS developer, he's also the man behind the Final Fantasy 5 Four Job Fiesta. It's an annual charity event that takes place each summer where hundreds of players run through Final Fantasy 5 under special challenge rules in order to raise money for Child's Play. Not only does he provide us with some insight behind the event, but he also drops some serious Final Fantasy 5 knowledge on us all. Also, he has a bell! It all runs a bit long, but it's a fun one, I promise...

349391_largerIf what you love about our podcast is random discussions about things related to the mobile industry, you're going to love this episode. We got an obscene amount of email from listeners and readers this week, and we go through all of it. It takes most of the episode, but we hit on things like the history of the App Store, ancient rumors of a "premium" App Store, how weirdly irrelevant the new iPod touch feels, and much, much more. Thanks to everyone who contributed to the show this week with your emails, iTunes reviews, and other random feedback. It means the world to us.

082895_largerWith Jared back in town and Mike with us (at least half the show) we switched back to streaming it live on Mobcrush, so check that out if you want to see the video version. Anyway, this week we kick things off with two iTunes reviews, an email, and a whole load of game discussion. Jared really didn't like Qbert Rebooted [Free], everyone really loved the new Pac-Man Championship Edition DX [$4.99], then we chatted about a trio of puzzle games: Prune [$3.99], The Long Siege [$1.99], and Guardian Sword [Free]. 006995_largerWith Jared out of town this week, I decided to tap Carter "3.5 Stars" Dotson to join instead. Cranky Carter, the source of The Carter Crater, and I discuss some surprisingly random stuff with Mike Meade before being joined by Prettygreat's Phil Larsen later in the podcast to talk about where he sees the future of the App Store headed for indies with so many stories coming out about how little money is often made by developers. There isn't any substantial game discussion this week as due to scheduling we recorded this on Tuesday, which was before the new games even came out. To make up for it, we'll do an extra-rad podcast next week, I promise. My other idea for this week's episode was to read an hour worth of Five Nights at Freddy's fanfiction. I'm not sure if this is better or worse.

Now, check your pants again, is that a little Beast Bound I see in there? It better be.

730639_largerWe tried something new this week with our podcast since we're going HAM with streaming and actually streamed its recording live to Mobcrush. We still did all the same stuff, and I eventually edited it all together into the .mp3 in the iTunes feed you guys all know and love, but recording it live was pretty neat as I could fiddle around with the games on my iPad while we discussed them. You're not really missing anything if you don't watch the video, but, sometimes it's nice to have a visual aid. Anyway, this week the big games we talked about were Don't Starve: Pocket Edition, Down The Mountain [Free], and Rush Hero [Free]. Hi, everyone! It's the beginning of a new month, and that means it's time for Eric Ford and me to talk your ears off about RPGs in the RPG Reload Podcast. For the second month in a row, we're joined by our fellow TA freelancer Andrew Fretz, who joins us from B25 of TouchArcade Towers to talk about Square Enix's Chaos Rings Omega. For Eric and Andy, it was their first time playing any Chaos Rings game, so they definitely had a different experience from me. As usual, we go wildly off-course all throughout, so you can look forward to outdated pop culture references, lame jokes, and all the other things you've probably come to expect from this podcast. We also answer some listener questions, and I even remembered to crush the stereo channels so that it doesn't sound like you're sitting in the middle of the table. Bonus!..

316645_largerThis week's episode of the podcast was dominated by game discussion of two awesome titles that were released this week. We get down and dirty with Adventures of Pip [$14.99] which seems like a really clever platformer that manages to blend pixel art both as an art style and as a game premise. Unfortunately, the virtual controls sort of suck. On the other hand, we're all excited for The Executive [$4.99]. It's a deceptively deep fighting game even though the controls seem so simple, oh, and even just calling it a fighting game is weird as there's so much more you do in it. We hit on the weekly Nintendo drama, and there's even some exciting news about the future of TouchArcade hidden in the podcast that you'll have to listen to to find out- Otherwise it'll all be revealed next week when we make our official announcement.

131498_largerFinally back to regular podcast episodes, it feels like it's been too long. We kick this week off with a bang, talking about our Patreon a bit before moving on to discussing what an absolute complete and utter sh*t show Sonic Runners [Free] is. Seriously, it's almost like the game is some kind of modern high-level satire on free to play. From there we move on to quickly chatting about games like Arrow [Free] and Piloteer [$2.99]. From there, we move on to discussing the news drama of the week split between what Nintendo is up to and the explosion caused by Apple removing the Confederate flag from the App Store.
