Last month I posted a review of ChronoSoft’s Rogue Touch [App Store], an iPhone adaptation of Rogue, the classic dungeon crawler that dates back to 1980. Being a fan of the genre, I found the game to be highly engaging and have spent a great deal of time with it since that review. It’s an impressive effort and easily the best Rogue in the App Store.
Since my review of the debut v1.0 release, the developer (forum member CommanderData) has been listening to feedback from our readers and has been hard at work in updating the title. His second update since our review, v1.2, has just hit the App Store.
I thought that fans of the game (and our readers are loving it) might appreciate a list of enhancements brought through both the v1.1 and v1.2 update releases.
New in version 1.1:
- Door locations shown on mini-map overlay.
- Music On/Off Option- Play your own music-in game! (Also observes the iPhone silent switch to turn off audio)
- Fast-Play Option- double tap in the direction you’d like to keep running in. Your character will go until he reaches an obstacle or passes something interesting (doors, treasure, stairs, a monster that wants to kill him!).
- Quick Shoot/Throw/Zap Option- while wielding a ranged weapon, tap its icon at the bottom of the screen to bring up the direction selector. Less tapping means more killing!
- Numeric Experience Option- Show the current experience and amount required for next level/rank of your character at the bottom of the screen. Use it wisely while monster hunting!
- Vibration Option- turn off vibrations if they are not desired (great if you want to play while sitting in meetings!)
- Remembers your last used character name, no need to type unless you want to try another name.
- 2 new potions: Hallucination: found in a few Rogue variants. Drinking it is probably not wise. The other is a secret one of our own design… You’ll either love it or hate it. Maybe both.
- 2 new weapons: Katana and shurikens!
- 2 new armors: Ninja Suit (shozoku) that provides stealth, but offers little protection, and Elfin chain mail, which is stronger than basic chain mail and cannot rust!
- Small tweaks for saved game handling.
- Better Chance of “super" weapons and equipment (powerful damage bonuses or special abilities). When descending to a level that has a super item you’ll “sense powerful magic on this floor"
New in version 1.2:
- Altered sensitivity for fast mode double-tap so that it is not triggered unintentionally (tap really fast now!)
- Fast Mode running now stops right at doors, and at hallway intersections. Even easier to play!
- Sorting of inventory. Items are grouped automatically as they are picked up.
- Added Default Zoom level, adjust it in settings from 25, 50, 75, 100%
- Searching now slightly less punishing
- One new weapon: The War Hammer
- One new secret staff!
- Several Bug Fixes (black hallways, x-ray vision problem, app closing between levels, vorpal weapons)

surprised apple let a 35 second per session time limit into the app store. But good for those debating the helicoptor app.
arn
Terrible precendent. I have heard from so many developers who had to resubmit their lite versions since Apple deemed them demos (time limits). Now the can of worms is open and now we'll see 30 second time limits on tons of games. So yes Apple has just contradicted itself by what it does and doesn't allow for lite versions.
at least give us a full minute you money-grubbing man!!!
Hopefully the can of worms isn't any more open than before: Apple has hundreds of people evaluating thousands of apps, with guidelines that are too vague and will always have gray areas. So contradictory decisions have always happened, and it hasn't meant precedent. I doubt this means we'll see a flood of timed demos. (Although it wouldn't be the end of the world--demos that are limited in SOME way will always be necessary.)
i'm surprised he didn't sell the lite version for $0,99 HAHA
austin, you really change for the better!
Just tried it, LoL, I can't get more then 4 ft. off the ground!
Thirty-five seconds gives me just enough time to slide some buttons and crash, very badly, once!!!! DELETED LITE VERSION (which actually didn't take much longer than about 35 seconds :) )
defo not use friendly im afraid.
this is so stupid...small fuel tank?? like any1 is gona buy the full version with this crappy lite
Oh dear.. A 35 second lite version.. Either someone has supreme confidence that this is enough of a glimpse to persuade people to buy the full game or a massive oversight! I'm thinking the latter.
Armed with this knowledge, I will not even bother with the lite version.
I can understand a racing game with a lite version offering a one lap race or a time trial, but that would give you at least two mins of gameplay.
Some lite version offer too much content, but this is too extreme in the other direction.
So it took me about 7 minutes to download and install it. Then in the 35 seconds I was able to flip the chopper onto it's side, and then the other time to flip it upside down. First off, it's a terrible lite version, because you don't get to see any of the nice scenery that are in X-Plane (I have airliner and the original). If I had tried out the ones I owned for only 35 seconds, I probably wouldn't have bought it, it doesn't get fun until the planes are in the air. So I have a feeling that this lite version will do more harm than good. A better idea would have been to make a lite version with only 1 chopper and one location and limit that to maybe 5 minutes. Right now, it's a waste of time to even put it on your phone.
Randomly, I played X-Plane today (don't know which version, I was flying a plane) and couldn't even figure out how to fly off in 2 minutes, less alone 35 seconds.
Hope this one with helicopters is easier to control, else 35 seconds will accomplish NOTHING.
@8bitgeorge The helicopters are far more difficult to control than winged aircraft in X-Plane. I have the full version of X-Plane on the Mac (which includes many aircraft + helicopters) and find it notably easier control with a PS2-style USB dual analog control pad than on the iPhone. Though the iPhone control of the winged aircraft is great.
+1 Blake.
Wow that was awful...
What does a gameplay video of the light look like??? Oh right, there is no gameplay.
I will be downlaoding this and give it a shot. I like flight sims like these.
35 seconds? Hahaha, only this guy.
I find out they have put up a LITE version of Racing too. No wifi to d/l it for now. (I have the EXTREME version)
I tried both lite versions. Heli REALLY tests your patience. You need to slowly lower the left control so slowly to lift off gently, using up 15secs before you're actually in the air. How you land is another matter!!!
If you choose the F15 in Racing, I found that you can glide for another minute after the fuel is gone, if you head straight up after takeoff. The others are too slow to build up speed.
I think Austin might have received more favourable response if the lite versions only had one vehicle but longer time limit (say 2mins).
I usually play all the xplane games for iphone, but this one is nearly unplayable...
It looks like the lite versions have been pulled ?
They're no longer available on the UK App store.
Make what you will of that.
I tried out Helicopter Lite last night and was also disappointed with the 35 seconds worth of fuel limitation.
I was up for a heli sim after playing some rcphoenix yesterday.
Yeah, what would it hurt to make it 1 or 2 min?? If people like it most will cough up the small price.
i wonder if we'll get a better lite version soon? this one was a joke!
35 Second? Jesus. 10 Minutes are better.
mike posner cooked up a rly cool track wit cooler than me! dat song make me reminice abt my university days lol.
