After loads of anticipation overnight, Nintendo revealed a video showing off what the rumored Nintendo NX actually is, as well as what they're calling it. The Nintendo Switch, as its dubbed, can be played either as a mobile device with detachable controllers or as a home console by dropping it in a dock. Check it out:

It'll be interesting to see how the Nintendo NX does. At first glance, it might seem a little big for hauling around, but remember, we've gotten very used to bringing giant (in my case, iPad Pro-sized) tablets nearly everywhere we go. It's possible Nintendo hit the sweet spot here between making console gamers who want to play on a TV happy, as well as people looking for a fancier Nintendo mobile experience beyond what the 3DS offers.

Of course no pricing or anything else has been announced beyond a release date of March 2017. What do you guys think? Are you going to get one? Is the decades-old internet meme that Nintendo is doomed finally coming true? Or something else entirely? Let us know in the comments.

  • Patricia Anaka

I'm just glad I won't have to buy a Wii U to play the new Zelda.

    • EdRed

      Same here.

      • Tallgeese

You'll never unlock the "all the competitors' consoles bought" XBOX achievement tho, bro. Think it over... Do you really wanna be that guy, bro? Girls don't talk to those kind of people. That's why I always have a list of my achieves stapled to my shirt so the lady knows I mean business. And I mean business with a saucy wink, bro.
        ...
        ...
        😉 bro

  • Anders Ge (f.k.a."usagisan")

    Nintendo Number One!

    • Tallgeese

USA's number one, bro! DON'T EVEN LOOK ME IN THE EYE!

  • Dankrio

    Buying one!

    • Danigarcia75

      Me too! Loving the concept

  • Razoric

    I'm buying one for sure.

  • macatron

Ok, Nintendo, I'm officially impressed! If they get the battery life to a decent level, I may just get one of these. 😀 Console quality gaming on the go has always been a dream of mine, and this looks like it may just fit the bill.

    • merrickal

More likely they'll ship external / extra battery packs if it doesn't.

  • Bliquid

    Better be well made.
All that sliding/clicking whatever will be very stressful for the materials.
Besides that, well, meh, too many pieces.

    • Axle_65

Keep in mind these are the people that brought you the Wii Remote. I don't know about you but I've smashed my Wii Remote into many things, mostly from playing tennis, and it's still in wicked condition. Nintendo knows how to make a solid product.

      • nini

You not use a lanyard? I had to get bumpers for my Wiimotes for extra grippiness, never shot out of my hand once.

      • Tallgeese

The Wiimote plus some thumbtacks and half a broom handle to complete the flail is my weapon of choice come the apocalypse for sure.

    • mabus51

As long as the controllers aren't wobbly like gamevice for iPhone. Then it should be fine.

  • Dankrio

Is is going to have skyrim! OMG!!!

    • Bliquid

Omg!!! It's going to have a game from two generations ago consoles!!!
      The hype!!!

      • mabus51

Skyrim was on PS3/Xbox 360. So one generation ago. Also it's being released on PS4/Xbox One. So apparently it's still a desired title and there's nothing wrong with that. Especially since we crave games on mobile like Jade Empire which was two generations ago as it was released on the original Xbox.

      • Bliquid

So you don't consider Switch being a new gen either...
        Interesting.

      • mabus51

When the GPU is being compatible to the PS4. No I wouldn't consider it next gen, its current gen. Sony and Microsoft aren't creating new systems either they're focused on seeing who double dips for a slightly updated GPU to play pseudo 4K. By the time PS5 an Xbox whatever comes out the Switch will be on its last legs VR and AR systems will be more of the norm.

      • Dorfdad

As a person who owns a gaming rig but prefers to game on consoles I hate people like the poster bashing the switch. I however don't really consider it a new generation but a paradigm switch. A side step to the Wii U (a little better graphically) but a switch in how we game. I have been waiting for this forever. I thought Apple would be the one to do this, but they squandered their opportunity and never embraced controllers properly. they could have made this accessory and forced both touch and controller settings in games but they didn't. Nintendo will offer mobile gaming on the device and touch screen support as well. This will sell very well if given a good price point which I expect to be $299.99 for base and stand. 64.99 for additional controller

      • Anonomation

Nope, it's actually Skyrim Special Edition

      • Dorfdad

Um Skyrim Remastered is coming out next week so having the same game on the NX is a big reveal and great news. That said they say the Remaster is equal if not surpassing a heavily modded high end PC as BASE! thats impressive to me and if it's on a handheld portable device even better!

    • macatron

Skyrim maybe be old, but it's still a quality title. Plus having the option to play an awesome game like this on the go is pretty mind blowing if you ask me. 😀

      • Dankrio

Exactly. But people prefer to focus on the bad side. A good game is a good game.

      • Bliquid

Yes, and once you played it, especially something as extensive as Skyrim, you are done. So a good game is a good game, and an old one is an old one.
I ain't focusing on the bads, though they exist.
I'm just pointing out that games are what make a console.
And if i see an enhanced WiiU (because the Switch IS what the WiiU wanted to be) presented with old games that couldn't make it before because Nintendo is cheap i can only ask myself one question: who is it for?
The ever diminishing fanbase or the casual masses who won't give a damn anyway for a piece of tech that doesn't have Whatsapp?
        Certainly is not for me.

      • gaberaph

        So don't get one

      • Bliquid

Thanks! I was going to get one because i find it absolutely redundant and pointless.
But luckily, you told me not to.

      • mabus51

All we play on mobile is old games ported to it. Not sure where you're point is trying to go. I certainly don't consider free2play "games" as actual games. To me they're tap object and shut off, return in 2 or 3 hours tap same object upgrade, come back in 8 hours. But to each his own I guess.

      • Bliquid

No, sorry, i'm the one that doesn't get your point.
        What are you talking about?
Because what I am saying, well, one of the things i am saying, is that using a remaster to showcase your brand new "revolutionary" console is dumb.
Are they trying to tell people that this time they are gonna have support from the big third party developers?
That worked for them before, yes, like a charm.
Are they saying you can take home console quality experiences on the go?
Yea, been years i ear this bs, it simply doesn't work.

      • mabus51

Yes they're saying 3rd party support is there. Which is why it's getting Skyrim Remastered. Skyrim remastered launches on PS4 & Xbox on Oct 28th which means it will be a launch title for Switch. So yes it's getting console quality games on the go. As many have stated this system does 1080p when docked and 720p on the go.

      • Bliquid

It doesn't work not because the technology isn't there.
It doesn't work because complex gaming experiences like Skyrim aren't fit for quick bursts outdoors.
How hard is this to understand?

      • Tallgeese

But I would like to live in Skyrim! WHY DON'T YOU UNDERSTNAD ME SOCIETY!?!?

      • Dankrio

How is it ao hard to underatand that different people like different things?

      • Tallgeese

You're the only one who undatabands meeeee, bowl of Top Ramen, and how do I show my thanks?! By eating you for nourishment! JUST LIKE A MONSTER!

      • Tallgeese

        No, get one, please.

      • Tallgeese

Belay that last order and get two!

      • Bliquid

        That's their trick, you see?
You think you are buying one, when instead you ARE getting two.
Or more, maybe with one of the 1k attachments it has it may become a Tesla.
        Sneaky Ninty.

      • Tallgeese

Well maybe it's not THAT bad... But ya laptop...

      • Dankrio

Ps4 and One are also getting a remastered version of Skyrim, by the way.

    • merrickal

If Nintendo supports modding (at least the most popular stuff), I'm in.

  • Press2Play

This will be my second nintendo console and my third nintendo handheld.

  • Michal Hochmajer

    Interesting...

  • timbojill

Are they trying to compete with Apple/iPad? Sega tried this against the PS 1 and look where they are now. lol

    • Dankrio

At least their games won't presumably break on every OS update.

  • Luci0

I'm in too lol. Don't really care because I always loved Nintendo and I want to love Nintendo

  • rezn

Absolutely will be buying one. Nintendo drove the happiness of my childhood now it does the same for my 3 boys. We love our Xbox One, Steam (PC/Mac) gaming etc. But imo none of those systems captures the nostalgia and pure gaming joy of Nintendo.

  • joseywales

Not been a fan of Nintendo for quite awhile but thoroughly impressed. I'm definitely buying

  • curtneedsaride

Definitely a cool concept, but again limits their concept for console/software to their own devices. It's cool that it could be another thing I bring with me, but with a phone and a tablet and a laptop, I don't want to carry anything else. I usually only carry 2 of those at a time anyway. I wonder if the games will again be little SD sized cards or all digital, and I wonder how they will end up being archived and able to be played 5 consoles from now. But, honestly, I'm just thinking too much about it. It looks like a fun thing to have and play, and so I can see them doing better than the WiiU. And that's a step in the right direction.

    • Michal Hochmajer

Guy insert sort of sd card into the device on the airport, so I guess...

  • Shiro

    Test

    • Nathan Reinauer

      Success!!

  • grenadedodger

Impressed with the idea. It will very much depend on the execution as to whether or not I will get one. For a start, is it an underpowered home console, or an overpowered handheld etc?

Still, good to see some innovation so will be following this closely.

    • Danigarcia75

But the dock to TV will have extra processors I hope

      • Tallgeese

Sorry, I very much doubt that's a thing... I it would be cool but I imagine it would be very hard to implement. Let's stay optimistic though, maybe this new tech won't need extra juice!

  • Kiven

Full fledged Nba 2k17 on the go alone is worth it. Then you have access to zelda and mario as well? Back to noodles and sardines for me...

    • macatron

      My thoughts exactly! 😀

    • http://wizodd.tumblr.com Wizard of Odyssey

Are you going to play 2-on-2 with your bros after playing real life basketball? That bit seemed super hokey to me.

      • Tallgeese

...And their stupid haircuts. Yeah just like the Pokego ad, the people seem fake because they're also shot at distance and don't use any words, US Nintendo should really take a look at JPN Nintendo and their ads... Also this feels a lot like a Nintendized but also somewhat updated PSP (but most likely outdated Playstation). I'm not sure I would try to fix that because PSP is on the decline. I'm unaware of the complexities of it but maybe double down on your DS and make a phone version to compete with the likes of Apple and Google whilst also capitalizing on your video games history... Obviously it's easy for me to shoot from the sidelines. I hope this works well for Nintendy...

      • Tallgeese

Also maybe don't choose a song with the lyrics "tryin'a have a good time."

  • Jason Howell

Haven't purchased a nintendo product since N64... by golly you better bet your bottoms i'm getting the Switch

  • Ryan

I'm a sucker for Nintendo games. Unfortunately, for the last two generations the cost of admission has been to buy an underwhelming console. Nice to see they're continuing that tradition.

  • Jason

It it would "switch" to my iPhone instead of it's own handheld thing, I'd like this. But I'm done carrying around extra game stuff.

    • Tallgeese

      exactly

  • Adam Kennedy

    Day one buy for me

  • Railgun

What a mess. Does Nintendo really think people need their video games with them 24/7? It's pretty sad.

    • Der-Kleine

You pretty much just described every mobile device that is capable of running games...

      • Railgun

No I didn't. The software makes for a completely different use case. Are they sacrificing a complete console experience in order to blindly make it more mobile? Especially with phones being ever more powerful? It's not a good strategy.

    • timbojill

People already have there games with them 24/7 with mobile games. But to have a console quality game with them 24/7?

      • Railgun

Exactly, that mobile/console distinction is pretty different. I don't get why you'd wanna run around playing a full fledged Zelda game.

      • Tallgeese

Well given the fact that I'd rather play console and pc quality games than some mobile games I can see why they'd want to carry around the game gear, let's just hope its battery is better than the game gear...

      • Railgun

It's just not the best setup for a full experience. Also not very smart to put more chips down on a concept (Wii-U) that bombed.

      • Michal Hochmajer

        2,5 hour at best

    • Rain1dog

Buying this in a heartbeat!! This is the best of all 3 console makers.

      • Railgun

        Oh goooooooood for you!

      • Tallgeese

I did not think it was a good idea to teach a sentient railgun sarcasm, but what do I know...?

      • Bliquid

You simply teach a sentient railgun how to shoot at sarcastic people.

      • Tallgeese

        is that how it laughs?

      • Railgun

        😉

      • Tallgeese

        D:

  • Modjular

I can already imagine losing one of those controllers.

    • Tallgeese

You mean one of your friends trading your good controller for one of their bad ones? Totally!

  • thumbs07

What an idea, Nintendo launching a mobile.

    • Tallgeese

      "It's not a ball! It's rounder!"

  • timbojill

In the past they made there money off of console/Mobile devices first. Since the major titles were Nintendo exclusives. Mario (cough).

  • Rain1dog

Now this looks AMAZING, great job Big N!!

PlayStation VR and now this!!! ❤️❤️❤️

  • Rain1dog

Watch... How fast this console grows.. right out the gate.

    This will be amazing.

    • Tallgeese

Nintendy will make gaming great again! Koopa Koopa Koopa!

  • Rain1dog

I'd wager an overwhelming majority of people who are bashing it... without knowing anything more than what it's designed to do and looks like...

Will be the first to preorder.

This will be a major console for Nintendo.

    • gaberaph

Agreed, it's going to turn the tide for Nintendo!

      • Bliquid

        Yes, they'll finally quit hardware.

    • Tallgeese

NO! I WILL BE FIRST TO PREORDER!!!! KNOW YOUR PLACE, WORMS!

  • Cryptidcolloquium

I'm really interested to see how this does for Nintendo. It doesn't replace a PS4 or Xbox, since (presumably) it will be underpowered in relation to those consoles - which means that 3rd party publishers will not be able to directly port their current games to it easily. And for me, with an iPhone, iPad and PS4, it seems like something I don't need - except for the Zelda factor. If I buy this, it's as a dedicated Zelda machine - and if the price of this is $350 or so, plus the cost of the game, well, it might be hard to justify. Maybe if there's a reboot of Metroid Prime coming down the pike too…. As I said, it will be interesting to see how this does. (Portable Skyrim is cool, but then again, I played that game a few years ago. Not sure if it is much of a selling point.)

    • Tallgeese

You don't love Skyrims, Bro!? What are you high skooma!? Praise Talos, bro! ...Praise! ...HIM!

      • Tallgeese

        *+on

      • Cryptidcolloquium

Ha - you're right, I do love the Skyrims. So many valuable life lessons, too: don't bother the mammoths or you'll make the giants angry. And don't ride your horse over a waterfall or your companion will jump off after you and die. Praise Talos!

  • Polymorphicspector

What i'm wondering about is how you play games, in the trailer it showed an SD card slot. Will it be able to play 3DS games (cartridge), disc, or be digital download. It didn't look like you could insert a disc, with all the movement and such you woudn't want to scratch the disc, so probably no disc drive. I could maybe see a 3DS cartridge slot. I also wonder what the battery life is, and if you would have to take a charger on the go so you could charge it. I do like the idea of it plugging into the tv, would it have wireless internet capabilities? I would love to play MH4U and MHG on the big screen.

  • maxbrickem

cool idea, but it all depends on execution. It also seemed like the games weren't very smooth - I am a sucker for smooth gameplay - it seemed a tiny bit choppy. As much as I appreciate nintendo's creativity I wish they would just come out with a super system like ps4 and Xbox. Why keep releasing underwhelming consoling? make it creative and super powerful. I would love to support that.

  • bilboad

This looks like my ideal console. Best of mobile and console worlds AFAIC. Personally I don't care if it's not as powerful as a XB1 or PS4 - the fact that I can play on my TV or take the exact same games to my bedroom or on the go is exactly what I've wished for from a gaming system. Plus I love the games available for Nintendo's current devices, and this seems like it will be only better. Hopefully it'll have a virtual console to support classic games as well.

  • pinta_vodki

This looks amazing. After all the hyper hype I was ready to be let down Wii U style, but here I am thinking of how to save money for day one purchase.

Wii has been a blast at parties, and I've carried it to my friends' places too many times to count, so having a portable version of that with Mario Kart and other of Big N's local multiplayer hits would be very cool.

    • Tallgeese

OMG, if they'd only made one of those crappy infomercial style ads with one of those people who fear/can't grasp/the idea of greasy pans and cables and just showed that it was super easy to bring something over to play with your friends that kind of ad would've been bril!

  • http://twitter.com/chubbypillow chubbypillow

Although i do like the concept. What can i do on the NX that i can't already on my phone? Havent they already tried and failed that portable console thing with the wii u? The only thing going for this system is nintendo games. And i havent played mario or zelda since snes. I am tired of the same ip just like i am tired of seeing final fantasy games still being made. Time to move on nintendo and make games for the iphone instead... or at least head into VR territory where future of gaming lies. I'm still going to buy the system though just for the hell of it.

    • Dankrio

Not risk breaking games every OS updates, for one. Playing Skyrim is a second. Have a functional gamepad that you can play with every game (did I mention support not breaking with every OS update?).

      • Bliquid

        Nintendo Switch: the Skyrim machine.

      • Dankrio

Yes, because we've already know the entire lineup from all lifespan.

Probably Skyrim is the only thing we get to play.

      • Tallgeese

Maybe with mods Dovahkin can play a variety of other games in-game on his Switch...
        ...
        ...
...It's going to allow for mods, right...

  • Jason

I'll call it the Nintendo Flop. Mobile gaming has gone to phones...no one wants to carry another thing around anymore. I have no idea who they're trying to appeal to here.
This is Wii U all over again.
    And cartridges? Really? No thanks.

    • TeddyNYC

You're right that mobile gaming has gone to phones. Causal mobile gaming that is where the "game" is free because it has to be. The Switch represents quality mobile gaming with specs that belong in 2016 with a nostalgic flavor. It's not PS4 Pro performance and it doesn't have to be. Coming close to PS4/Xbox One specs is more than enough. I haven't owned a Nintendo product since 2011 when I sold both my Wii and DSi. I didn't like the 3DS or Wii U. I'm getting the Switch when it comes out and you may be tempted to do the same despite what you're saying now.

      • Dankrio

I would love if the console was close to PS4 and Xone, but I am afraid not. We'll have to see about that. My guess is not, though.

      • Jason

Exactly. If I can play a game that's truly PS4 level on that handheld, I'll be buying one...but I just don't see that as a possibility.

      • Jason

I'll certainly be tempted for Mario and Zelda if nothing else. I'm just sad that tying themselves to a proprietary mobile platform will just guarantee that Nintendo will still be a generation behind the curve on any non-Nintendo made games.
But we're the massive video game fans. They have to appeal to the casual folks, and I think this is a hybrid system that is the worst of both worlds for the majority of casual gamers.

  • Alexythimia23

This is a great concept, will defo be purchasing, also nintendo do make quality fun games so im sold! Im sooooo glad you reall can play it on the go as there was rumours of a watered down version to play on the go which does not have the same appeal. I think devs will be very interested in this.

  • timmfox

I'm in if I can transfer my digital 3DS purchases. Nintendo has a history of making you pay again on new consoles.

  • scottsoapbox

This explains why Nintendo wasn't keen to jump any good titles to iOS. If it works as hyped they are going to make boatloads of money.

    • TeddyNYC

Yeah, a lot of people (myself included) were screaming for Nintendo to become relevant again by tossing all of their new titles at iOS and Android. It seems they had something better in mind, for themselves and maybe for us as well.

      • Tallgeese

Don't worry, my child, much like Darth Sidious, Nintendy has a plan for us all!

  • Tito Piccolo

don't hate for what I'm about to say. But this looks like it will be a huge FLOP!

  • merrickal

Is this is the next gen 3ds/console?

  • rewind

The thumbsticks are in the right places. And it's a creative idea. Good start. If they market this clearly and well (unlike they did with the Wii U) I think it may be success.
