WWDC 2016: Apple TV Gets New Remote App, New Features, and Live Broadcasting Through ReplayKit?

Apple announced the latest features coming to tvOS, with the new updates set to hit this fall. If you’ve misplaced your Apple TV remote and just have your phone, then good news – the Remote app will be updated to support all the functionality of the physical remote, along with full games support. What’s interesting is that Eddy Cue quickly mentioned ReplayKit with live broadcasting, which is a seeming new feature that might get more of a mention in the iOS part of the keynote. If Apple introduces live streaming straight from iOS, it could be a killer feature – or a potential Sherlocking of mobile streaming services.

Gaming still has a deep hole to climb out of on Apple TV, but any new features can’t hurt, and Apple committing to the platform even further is a good sign. I think it will help if Apple gets some new reasons to buy Apple TV for cord-cutters, versus Chromecast, Fire TV, or even just keeping their old Apple TV box. Perhaps someday that will be revealed, but for now, Apple’s staying the course with Apple TV.
