Surprise releases are always the most fun, no? Retro City Rampage DX [$2.99] coming to iOS certainly qualifies, as there was no word that it was coming to iOS, development of the game seemed to cease after it released on PC (Windows AND MS-DOS), Mac, Linux, PS4, PS3, PS Vita, Nintendo 3DS, Wii, Xbox 360, unreleased versions for DS and PSP, and even prototypes for NES and Windows 3.1, with Shakedown Hawaii in the works as well. But no, an iOS version has suddenly appeared on the App Store:

The game is a whopping 11 MB, because the game was made to be as close to retro specifications as possible. And the good news is that while the game has touch controls – and there's sure to be parts that prove to be difficult with them, but controller support is here as well, so you get the same experience as every other version. The only thing missing appears to be Apple TV support, but hey, you can't always get what you want. This is $4.99, though, so, bargain!

Damn! Nice surprise. Happy to play through all these missions again. It's a great game! And I knew we would get something big by morning. 🙂

How much time did he spend making that game again? 7 years or something...mind blowing. Awesome parody and production values.

Those PC kids always get everything first, with their high falutin' DOS systems.

    • speetz

      This actually made me chuckle

  • RomanReigns

    "Whooping 11MB" as if its 11GB 😛

    • RomanReigns

      Whopping*

Yes, sarcasm can be challenging at times.

    • Modjular

I think he meant whopping sarcastically because it's such a small app. Like, I have a basic calendar app that's 30mb. It's crazy how well you can optimize a game if you know how.

I've just got this via humble bundle 16,then ios version released,WTF!!

    • Luciano1084

Same here.. I have it for ps4 also.. I'm going to buy it on iOS also, something tells me I'll enjoy it here more than any other platform

      • VirtualBoyFreak

I have it for the 3DS, but I'm getting it for iOS too. It's ideal for on-the-go gaming 🙂

      • witedahlia

I have it on every platform I own, and yet here I go getting it for iOS. I've been waiting for this. Weird, isn't it?

  • scottsoapbox

    11MB! That's crazy pants.

And yet another retro game. I've been gaming since 1991, I have those fond memories of 8 and 16-bit games, and I know the gameplay of this particular game is great. But, c'mon, we are fed up with retro. I didn't buy my 6S with the A9 to play games like this, or Tomb of the Mask. Where are production values? Where are those AAA-titles? The hardware can run UE 3 and 4, this is, for God's sake, the technical level of the PS 360. Where are al least ports? Only Bioshock? Why do we get FF9 instead of FF13?! Sorry for the outcry, it's just sheer disappointment.

However.... Thousands of us have been wishing for this game to be Ported to iOS and that glorious day has finally come! (It also ain't your average retro game so don't just judge a book by its cover😝)

      • Егор Бочаров

I've played it on the 3DS and competed it ages ago, it was really nice, which I have mentioned in my post. My complain was about the general situation, not this game in particular.

      • speetz

Well I think if a game does retro graphics but takes advantage of hardware for plays type, general scope and amount of content and other areas it's a fair trade off. I mean Ike games like H&C and stuff too but retro to me gives devs the chance to really go at the depth of the rest of the game and still have pleasant and desirable graphics. Just depends on the title, plus this one has graphics options for the whole game afai have read (dunno how much for mobile)

    • spader623

Let's see... What's the top grossing game on iOS right now? Clash royale. I don't think I need to go into any more detail.

      • Егор Бочаров

Yep, that's what saddens me. Developers don't feel like catering to people who are willing to pay $10, 15, 20, but get their premium titles on the hardware that is gazillion times more powerful than the 3DS or the PS Vita.

    • Tallgeese

FFXIII? Do you mean that game that's 60GB? Pretty sure even Bioshock wasn't that pretty because of how stripped down it had to be to function at even a reasonable framerate (I think Apple also caps the size of it's games). Also if you're playing beautiful games like that on mobile you're really not playing the game as the creators really intended... Like watching an imax movie on a tiny screen that you're constantly sticking your thumbs into...

      • Tallgeese

Maybe if Apple AND AMAZON weren't taking secondary government sized 30% chunks out of all of the devs profit margins (whilst conveniently sidestepping their own taxation and US regulations by working overseas) devs would be a little less hesitant to spend the money to make better games, little guys also might not be limping from game to game...

11mb?? Still about 10x larger than actual NES games. But still pretty incredible in this day and age of bloated sized mini games.
