When I think back to some of my fondest memories of the original PlayStation, many of them involve me violently driving into my buddies until they explode into a ball of flames in Destruction Derby. There's something so simplistic and beautiful about a demolition derby: A bunch of vehicles smashing into one another until there's just one left standing. It's so American! I've always wondered why this type of game wasn't more prominent on mobile. I mean, we have the classic Carmageddon [Free / Free] which somewhat scratches that itch, and games like Death Rally [Free] and CarRage [Free] are good fun but they're more weapon-based vehicular mayhem. Sometimes I just want to smash my car into another person's car the good old-fashioned way, you know? Enter Zero Games Studios, who are looking to plug the demolition derby hole in the App Store with Extreme Gear: Demolition Arena. Check out the trailer.

Now, Demolition Arena may not have the flashiest graphics around especially compared to racing games like Asphalt 8 [Free] or Real Racing 3 [Free], but I'm willing to sacrifice fancy visuals for a cool vehicle destruction system and smooth online multiplayer. The trailer also mentions asynchronous play, and I'm kind of curious how that works out. By far the coolest thing about Demolition Arena are the arenas themselves. I spotted a skatepark type thing with ramps to launch off of, some sort of space station with a gaping hole in the side that leads out into the void, a theme park place with a big ol' gorilla head. Oh, and a freaking aircraft carrier? Are you kidding? Sign me up! Extreme Gear: Demolition Arena is shooting for a March release, so keep an eye out for more on this one soon.

It's F2P. Aside from the video showing two currencies, the dev has confirmed it below πŸ˜‰

If it didn't say "LIVE and Asynchronous" then I'd be more concerned. I hope LIVE means real-time and I assume asynchronous means "silly robo-AI versions of your friends". Looks hype and I agree about the graphics. Gameplay first.

    • Deygus

Yeah I hope it works well and has good online multiplayer to support it otherwise it may fail..

    Always Drive Backwards!!!!
This trailer look good, I hope the game measures up to my rainbow filled vision of what I hope it will be.

Having played a lot of FlatOut 2 back in the day, this looks kind of disappointing compared to that.

Hello everyone. I'm one of the people working on Extreme Gear !
Thanks to Jared for this article ! It's a nice surprise and we didn't expected so good reactions !
We're a very small indie studio which love Destruction Derby and we're trying to create something in the same spirit.
We will post videos on youtube in the following weeks to explain a bit more the game and all its aspects. So I think you'll have some answers to all your questions.
And unfortunately, we don't have real-time multiplayer for this game as it was too much resources for a small team with tight budget like us, but we think we found an other way to have something challenging ... You'll see soon πŸ™‚

  • Quazonk

The game looks like some Destruction Derby style fun, but the post above was a heart crusher about no real-time multiplayer. Graphics look about as dated as Destruction Derby itself, and for those of us who haven't felt old yet today, Destruction Derby came out over 20 years ago. Don't get me wrong I'll still buy it πŸ˜€

    • Pierre-Luc Vettier

You'll not need to buy it as the game will be free πŸ™‚

      • Deygus

I've been talking with the devs over email and yes they said it'll be FREE to play with ads but you can pay to remove them..

      • Quazonk

Thank you for the response, Pierre-Luc, the TA community always loved interaction from developers. Can you elaborate on the monetization model of the game? Will it have ads, timers (please nooo), consumables, skins, etc?

      • Pierre-Luc Vettier

The game will have ads (not that much and removable.).

Also, players will have a fuel tank that limits the number of games. (however, it is possible to enlarge the tank with in-game currency and the tank fills itself quite quickly).

At least we tried to make a not too restrictive F2P model, and since now our beta testers seemed to be satisfied with it :you can unlock a lot of things and progress through the game quite quickly without feeling short on in-game money if you manage to have good results during your battles.
Player will have possibility to buy new cars, customization elements, mechanical improvements and unlock new arenas.

Don't hesitate to ask more questions, it's always a pleasure to talk to fans ! πŸ™‚

      • Aaron C

        Noooo πŸ™

      • Deygus

Devs seem to have a decent idea behind the f2p module with buyout to get rid of ads

  • chief78

A race mission mode (career) would be excellent, and then this would truly be DD for iOS.

  • Mike T4

I wouldn't really call this damage model adequate. Try Wrecked as an alternative, already released game

    • Deygus

Ummm I think you need to watch the video again...wrecked is very similar and not as good as you claim...only thing wrecked has is shiny cars but that's an easy fix in future game updates if this game gets going good enough to support it with future updates devs promised

  • boydstr

This looks like a PS1 game, not something that use the power of the in my case iPhone 6+

    • Pierre-Luc Vettier

      Hi boydstr !
In fact, it will use the power of your device a lot !
Graphics may seems a bit old, but when you see cars in games like Asphalt 8, they are made in "one piece". In Extreme Gear, cars have only few less amount of polygons, but we have also to modelize the engine, suspensions and more as the cars are fully destroyable. (and also texture more objects ... And we have 12 cars like this to show on screen !!). Finally the 2 games require more or less the same amount of power from your device, but are used in a different way.

      • boydstr

Thanks for your reply I didn't want to give the impression that it is a bad game because I didn't played it yet.

      • Pierre-Luc Vettier

I made an answer which haven't been approved by moderation ... But in few words : no problem for me ! Everybody can't like our game ! πŸ˜€

    • Deygus

Graphics aren't everything...I would gladly welcome any game with good core gameplay and customizations if it came at the price of bringing down graphics a level or few..

  • boydstr

The game prototype racing levels looked real cool nice atmosphere.

    • Pierre-Luc Vettier

Thank you ! We spent several months working on it so it was really heartcrushing to cancel it. But it was necessary as creating numerous high quality tracks was a too huge step for a small team like us.
