‘UnTwitched’ Is an Unofficial Twitch Client for the New Apple TV

320x192bbFor some totally baffling reason, there isn’t an official Twitch viewer on either the new Apple TV or older Android TV devices. Presumably it’s something they’re working on, since there are apps for consoles already, but it’s a super strange omission right now. Thankfully, developer Jermaine Jong has come to the rescue with the totally unofficial new Apple TV App UnTwitched. It’s a buck and basically works as advertised, letting you both browse popular games and featured streams, as well as search for anything you want. There’s no chat to speak of, but, that’s arguably a good thing.

The weird thing about UnTwitched is I’m not entirely sure how kosher its existence is when it comes to the Twitch API Terms of Service. Specifically, the line that pertains to how third party developers can’t “access any portion of any Twitch audiovisual content by any means other than use of the Twitch Player." So while the long term future of UnTwitched seems potentially questionable, hopefully Twitch doesn’t shut the app down until they’ve got their own app that we can download. It’s not like I bought UnTwitched because it’s better than the Twitch app, I bought it because there’s no Twitch app.

Sure, you could get similar functionality by using the iOS Twitch app (Free), but one of the nicest things about the new Apple TV is not needing to totally monopolize another iOS device as the video source. Particularly how in iOS 9 loading up the camera app kills all video/audio coming from the device, it’s way handier to just have something running on the new Apple TV itself.

Anyway, since there’s no real way to link to new Apple TV apps, load up your Apple TV App Store and search for “UnTwitched“.
