Possibly to celebrate the Japanese release of Dragon Quest 7 on mobile, Square Enix has been rolling out sales one at a time on some of the already-released titles in their popular series. Well, we may not know if we're getting that game in English or not, but we can certainly take advantage of these deals on the excellent installments that have already been localized, right? The latest sale comes for the latest release, Dragon Quest 6: Realms Of Revelation [$14.99]. Even though it just came out in July, you can pick it up for a short while at $9.99 instead of its regular $14.99 price.

Dragon Quest 6 follows the story of a young man from a tiny, unimportant village. While running an errand for the village mayor one day, he stumbles across a bizarre hole in the ground. When he goes through it, he discovers a whole other world. What's the mystery behind it? Well, I'll leave that to you to figure out. The game originally released in Japan only on the 16-bit Super Famicom. It later received a remake for the Nintendo DS, which made it out in English by the skin of its teeth. The iOS version of the game is based on that remake. The game features an unusual amount of characterization for its party members, and a robust job system. It's also one of the longer games in the series, so you'll have plenty to chew on if you decide to bite.

If you want a bit more detail about the game, I encourage you to check our review. It's not my favorite game in the series, but it's still awfully good. Looking at other recent Dragon Quest sales, you've probably got about a week to decide if you want it or not, and there's no telling exactly when this particular installment will go on sale again. At the risk of repeating myself once too often, if the game looks good to you, it's probably better to grab it sooner rather than later.

    • Milotorou

I feel ya, bought it 5 days ago and i didnt even start the damn thing yet lolll

  • Jeremy Price

Shaun, how do you rank the DQ games? Best to worst?

    • Bool Zero

I want to say that he did an article on that here a while back detailing, in his opinion, just that! Might want to do a search, I'm almost certain I remember reading an article with him laying it out!

      • Milotorou

He did but only 8 and 4 were out at this time i think, he ranked dragon quests and final fantast in a kind of mixup.

For the sake of discussion, im a huge dq fan and my own experience would be as follow (played 6 on ds only but its the same game so)

        DQV-DQIV-DQVIII-DQIII-DQVI-DQ1=DQ2

Even DQ 1 and 2 are fun though, dont get me wrong !

    • ra51

I recall reading this a while back...I can't find that article though..

    • Shaun Musgrave

      Hmm, today I'll say: 5 > 4 > 3 > 9 > 6 > 7 > 8 > 1 > 2. The top couple and bottom couple don't change often, but I'm constantly rearranging the middle.

      • ra51

Just wondering though, are the Dragon Quest games continual from one another? Kinda like how the Phantasy Star games (except for PS3) sort of are? Or are they all different games altogether like the Final Fantasy series?

Trying to decide which one I should start on first...

      • Shaun Musgrave

1-2-3 form a pretty tight trilogy. 4-5-6 have loose connections with each other. 7 stands alone, 8 kinda refers to an older one in its lore but mostly stands alone, and 9 stands alone.

If you've never played any of them before DQ1 is honestly a great place to start.

It's light on the narrative but short enough that it makes for a great mobile title.

As far as best to worst goes... DQVII is definitely my favourite. I'm pining for the remake to come out West. DQ2 is probably the worst.

How dare someone say that my beloved PC 'Betsy' will be obsolete someday. I am patently offended!

Oops, it looks like I might be a couple days late with my reply. 😘

  • orangecan

I'd rate chapters of the chosen and heavenly bride about the same - and this one just below. But all 3 rank up there for me with the best RPGs I've played.

Now all someone needs to do is port skies of Arcadia and I'll be a happy boy.

that surely would be a dream come true, if sega did that they would totally redeem themselves in my eyes haha
