This is How Nintendo is Breaking Into the Smartphone World

Nintendo and mobile gaming have been flirting quite nicely as of late. First there was the whole Puzzle and Dungeons (Free) making an appearance on 3DS thing. Then, Nintendo president Satoru Iwata talked about bringing more mobile games to 3DS. Well, loving is about giving and taking, and Iwata says he wants to bring a Mii app to iOS. Iwata said “It would be fun for players to use their Mii characters as icons on social media. We are currently developing an application that will allow users to do that. The app will be announced around the time our full-year [financial] results are released."

Baby steps, Iwata. While the odds that a full-on Pokemon release makes it to iOS any time soon is doubtful based on this news, at least it shows that Nintendo is paying attention to mobile. Other companies have been doing so through tie-in and complementary apps, sometimes with odd effects. Who would have thought Evolve needed a match-3 game companion? So, we’ll see what happens, but Nintendo is clearly paying attention to mobile now.
