Terry Cavanagh's platforming masterpiece VVVVVV [$2.99] is seeing its first ever sale on iOS, down to just 99¢ from its regular price of $2.99. Originally VVVVVV was released on Mac and PC in January of 2010, and was widely acclaimed from critics and players alike. The entire game is built around a gravity flipping mechanic that saw the main character Captain Viridian going from traversing floors to traversing ceilings with just the push of a button. In fact, the only actions available in the game are left/right movement and gravity flipping; there was no jumping to speak of which is normally a major function of platforming games. That's what made VVVVVV so brilliant though, as it explored the gravity flipping in every way imaginable, and has some of the most ingenious level design that I've ever seen in any video game.

Anyway, VVVVVV is great, and it seemed like an iOS port would be coming as far back as the fall of 2012. Despite being a game that relied heavily on precision, Cavanagh felt that he could make the game work on touch screens. It took a lot longer than expected, but VVVVVV finally did arrive for iOS this year, and Cavanagh was right: the game controls incredibly well on touchscreen and was just as enjoyable as ever.

I can say without question that VVVVVV is amongst my very favorite video games of all time, regardless of platform. It's probably at its best with physical controls, but you'd be surprised how well the iOS version controls, and I had no issues beating every nook and cranny on my iPhone when VVVVVV launched back in June. If you haven't experienced it before, or if you were just holding off on grabbing the iOS version, I absolutely recommend grabbing it during this 99¢ sale. Terry Cavanagh rarely has sales on any of his games, so this might be a one-time deal to own an absolute classic in your pocket.

Yay, finally gave it a try.... and couldn't put it down until I finished it. The very last screens are a nightmare for touchscreen controls... but I somehow made it through (not without getting really angry!) :) AMAZING little game.
