Back at GDC in March, Eli and I were judges at The Big Indie Pitch, an event that brought dozens of game developers together to pitch their games to game media types speed dating style. One of the games that stood out in the pack was Wizard Golf RPG from Floor 27 Industries. It looked to mix classic dungeon crawling gameplay with the mechanics of golf. It seems like it would be an unlikely pairing, but Wizard Golf actually looked really cool even in its early state. One of the neat side effects of mixing these two genres is that your character in the game isn't just using normal golf clubs, rather they get to use magical items like an Ice Rod or a Bomb Rod. This week the developer posted an update in our forums showing off these two types of "clubs" in animated .gif form. Check it out.

For a more in-depth look at Wizard Golf RPG, you can also check out this YouTube video from early March that shows a bit of actual in-game play as well as the developers explaining their inspiration for combining golf with an RPG and the strange similarities between the two. According to the official website, Wizard Golf will be free and is targeting a release this month, though it's unclear if they'll actually hit that mark or not. Either way it's looking like it's coming along nicely, and I'm looking forward to getting my hands on the finished product.

Just watched the video for this when I was getting ready for work this morning. It sounds like a bad idea for a game but when I actually saw the video I was surprised how awesome it looked. Going to follow this one for sure.

Damn, they beat me to it (kinda). Been diligently working on my shuffle-board rpg prototype. Gold, shuffleboard, all the same on a 2d plane. On topic though, I do wish adopters of the Oryx rpg sprite set would customize them a little bit. It's great that the set allows devs publish who don't have the time or skill to produce their art, but the set is getting old fast; all looks like the same game.

When I first saw the title I thought someone took the idea of marrying two genres in game dev story and ran with it.
