Every year mobile hardware gets more and more powerful, rivaling the cutting edge graphics found on dedicated gaming systems. And that's great, but, it's important to remember your roots too. That's why I think there are so many retro-inpsired games still being released. People still love that pixely, old school look. But there's a difference between something being "retro-inspired" and something feeling like it could have straight up been released on the NES twenty five years ago. Venture Kid, an upcoming platformer that I ran across during a deep dive in our forums, falls into the latter category. From the sounds, visuals, gameplay, and even the cutscenes, Venture Kid feels like the kind of game that you'd need to blow the dust out of before playing. Check out the trailer.

Obviously, there's a huge Mega Man influence going on in Venture Kid, which I'm actually really digging. Of course, when it comes to these types of games on touchscreens, everything hinges on how well the controls are implemented. That's something we'll have to wait to find out, but hopefully it won't be too long, as the developer has stated in our forums that he's shooting for a Q1 2014 release. I'm anxious to get my hands on Venture Kid, and I've got my fingers crossed it'll be launching in the not too distant future.

Update: I received an email from FDG Entertainment, who are publishing Venture Kid, and they've let me know that what's shown in this current trailer is quite early footage of the game, and they've implemented some new effects like parallax scrolling. So if you think it looks good now, the final product should look even better. Unfortunately, though, they said release won't be before Q2 of 2014, so it won't be coming quite as quickly as I'd hoped. At any rate, keep your eye on this one for sure.

I need this in my life!

If the controls are great then count me in. I hope they let us demo it, like first few levels for free.

I like the style all though I for one could do without the 8bit soundtrack, I prefer Ava's retro style more where something is inspired by while yet taking advantage of new technology, which this isn't.

But this isn't the first time I dog on "new retro" stuff, each to their own.

Will stay tuned! Looks better than another mega man port that's for sure.

Wow... Venture Kid certainly puts on a few pounds between the intro and the gameplay.

      • Onikage725

        True to NES lol

  • curtisrshideler

Looks awesome! I'll totally buy it IF they optimize it for the iPhone 5 screen.

    • mclifford82

      Critical centimeters are critical.

  • Rothgarr

Something tells me this will be more difficult than either "Manos: Hands of Fate" or "Gunman Clive"...

    • http://www.fdg-entertainment.com Future777

The game will be very playable for a broad audience but pro gamers will get the most out of it. I think we'll have it well balanced.

      • jaggi

This looks like it would be right at home on the 3ds eshop.

      • Peter

Agreed! I'd love to see it on 3DS.

      • Pete Martell

Why? Platformers can be just as good and the iPhone is way better than the 3DS anyhow.

In fact, Super Mario should be on iOS instead of the now shitty Nintendo handhelds.

      • jaggi

Have you ever actually played something on, say, the 2DS. That ugly, cheap handheld that you can get for the price of an iOS controlle is the most comfortable handheld I've ever had the pleasure of playing with. There are a few iOS platformers available on the eshop (Mutant Mudds, Little Acorns, Kung Fu Rabbits, Gunman Clive). I've played all of these on both platforms and although they were definitely okay on my iphone, they were just a lot more fun on the 2DS and the 3DS.

Don't get me wrong: I love the iphone and I will buy this game on day one. I was just suggesting a release on the eshop.

One last thing: you can get most Mario classics on the eshop for the price of a coin doubler in your average iOS game 😉

      • Peter

You sound pretty pissed off, huh? I'd love to see it on 3DS alongside the iOS version, not instead of it. (..."shitty"? tsc, tsc)

  • Mark DeNardo

If FDG is making this it should be pretty good! The music is epic.

  • Jesse7277

    Looks good

  • http://www.jeandenis.net/ Jean-Denis Haas

    Love it!

  • Phillip Nicewaner

The first thing that came to mind was Mega Man. Looks interesting. Hope more put forth efforts to create great games in the spirit of the classic styles.

  • shieldser99

    I must have it

  • Buzzit

When will somebody remake a Monty game for iOS !!!!! ?????

    • Buzzit

Game looks great by the way

  • thiagovscoelho

This would be more like really late NES titles like Mr. Gimmick, or just the SNES. Very advanced. Still 8-bit though. But definitely better graphically than a majority of titles released for the console.

  • The kernel

    Instabuy on release.

  • Ninja_Blade_Diego

OMG! I can't wait, it looks and sounds AWESOME!!!

  • 21tigermike

    Hey, look, Mega Man! 😉

  • Salt Abdullah

Sweet, instabuy. Finally a game without any IAPs. Phew.

  • http://www.onebagtravel.com/ OneBagTravel

Wow a trailer with actual gameplay! Shocking 🙂
This looks great, I hope it actually comes to steam because I hate platformers on touch screen. Looks like it's straight out of DuckTales or Megaman

  • SinisterSteve

One word to describe this game: Yes!

  • Echoen

    Sick music! Definitely getting this

  • pkmaximum

Alright this game looks pretty awesome!

Also port this to the Vita!

  • imcookie

    Wow this looks genuine.

  • Draven2222

question: does iOS version support iOS7 Game controllers.?

  • Nekkedsnake

looks great! if this plays tight like mikey shorts then I'm sold.

  • Sven Van de Perre

Okay. This looks cool. I'm a huge megaman fan, so this looks right up my alley.

  • pdSlooper

Looks great, would be right at home with controller support.

  • Techead81

I wish I understood why everyone is so obsessed with retro graphics. Today's devices are capable of SO much more...lol guess I don't get it!

    • EvilAbdy

For me graphics don't matter as long as the game is fun. retro does give it a certain look and feel though that people tend to gravitate too. Plus it's fun to play an oldschool looking game with modern gameplay elements added in.
