It's the 20th anniversary of the Ridge Racer franchise, and Namco Bandai is getting ready to release a brand new mobile game in the series called Ridge Racer Slipstream. The game has some shiny graphics and a heavy emphasis on customization, boasting over 300 different ways to customize your ride. The game will also feature power-ups for your vehicles like a pretty standard nitro boost and a pretty not-so-standard… er, jump… in the air… thing? You can catch what Ridge Racer Slipstream looks like in motion in the following trailer.

This isn't the first time Ridge Racer has graced iOS, as Ridge Racer Accelerated [$5.99 / Free (HD)] launched way back in December of 2009. Unfortunately, it was pretty mediocre upon release mostly due to its control scheme, though a later update did address that. Still, I'd say it was a pretty underwhelming showing for such a classic franchise. I'm not sure if Slipstream will be the homerun that fans are looking for either, but I'll try to remain optimistic. The choppy framerate doesn't inspire a lot of confidence, and although it hasn't been said yet, I'm pretty sure Slipstream will be a free-to-play game, so there's always that to consider.

It shouldn't be long until we can find out more though, as on the Namco Bandai Facebook page it says Ridge Racer Slipstream is set to launch on December 19th. We'll let you know when it hits.

I never understood how or why the Ridge Racer franchise is so popular. I've played most of them and I just can't get into them. There are so many better racers out there IMO. I'll still try this one out. Maybe it will change my mind.

It's because it doesn't strive to be a sim or ultra realistic. It's a quality arcade racer which I find more amusing.

It's because it doesn't strive to be a sim or overly realistic. It's a quality arcade racer that I and most folks find quite amusing.

If you owned the original Playstation at launch and played Ridge Racer, you'd understand. If you didn't, no amount of explaining will convey what that game meant at that time on that console. This particular release is highly likely to be irrelevant though, both for those who played the original and those who haven't.

I owned the original PS at launch and also had the original Ridge Racer. Sure it was a cool game in its time, but just because that game was decent (mainly because it was the first of its kind ), doesn't mean that every other Ridge Racer is going to be just as great. It's just a mediocre arcade racer. Yup, I guess I DON'T understand.

Maybe because every Ridge Racer iteration up till PsVita used to be part of launch titles wave of any console. As we know, launch lineup games tend to suffer (in most cases) from lack of quality. But if you are the only racer available on the platform, chances are people are going to pick it up and praise it not because it is a good game but because they are hungry for content and its all they have.

It's because everybody keeps trying them hoping to have their mind changed just like you do. The entire audience for this game is made up of optimists 🙂

For me it's the "simple-yet-exhilarating" quality of Ridge Racer that I enjoy. I don't always want my driving games to be simple, but sometimes I do like to drive a game which gives me a great sense of speed and fun, without all the complications of powerups, car combat, car tuning, realistic damage, or a complex physics model, that many racers have. I keep Ridge Racer 6 around on my Xbox 360 for when I want a dose of simple pure racing fun.

That trailer did nothing for me, certainly never got me excited and surly that's the whole idea of a racing game trailer?? 30 seconds looked like an afterthought as opposed to showcasing an "exciting" game

Last Ridge Racer I played was Ridge Racer Type 4, last one I enjoyed was Rage Racer (3), But I'll still check this out when it's released, I don't like the drifty physics of them all now although Rage Racer used them that game was great.

I will see if it can help me with getting out of RR3

Yet another racing game. Looks like they're going to depend on the name to boost sales.

When there's already so many standout racing titles on this platform, this games gonna have to jump through flaming hoops to impress me.

This has made my year! Ridge Racer is by far my favourite racing game series ever!

I have never been a fan of simulation racers like Forza, Gran Turismo and IOS's own Real Racing. It's the arcade racers that bake my cake and Ridge Racer is the cherry on top ... Expect for maybe Burnout Paradise which was a pure masterpiece.

I bought Ridge Racer accelerated despite its flaws. It's awful tilt controls and choppy framerate were eventually ironed out leaving the Ridge Racer experience I wanted ON MY PHONE! it was brilliant! Until I upgraded to an iPhone 5 and found the extra stretch too uncomfortable.

All I want from this is that Ridge Racer experience that I know and love. In widescreen. I just hope that it's not a free to play game, that model in racers always seems gross, even Asphalt 8 which I paid for had those free to play mechanics which turned me right off.

    Bring on the Ridge!

I can't imagine ridge racer being remotely playable with touchscreen controls given the nature of the game, it was always best played with a steering wheel let alone standard joypad controls

Have you not played RR Accelerated? The touch screen controls work really well. I'd even say better than some of the current racing games.

  • thebeat07

    MFi compatible?

RR 4 the best of the all series! Enough said!

  • chief78

I loved classic RR, and have stayed up with the series over the years. With that said.....PS Vita was a paid for IAP-fest that pissed off even the most devoted. And then there was the sad attempt of the last one (whose name escapes me becuz I didn't want to remember it). I just don't trust bandai namco (or namco bandai...whatever the heck they call themselves now)......

  • trackside

300 upgrades and boost, jumping systems. Sounds like it's going to be an iap fest.
Hope to be proved wrong though.

  • hudz

Doesn't look like a Ridge Racer game!
Looks like a out of house project with Ridge Racer stamped on it!

  • chinito77

I'll be buying this, only because I have been a RR fan since the Playstation days. I don't need fancy graphics with an arcade racer, just give fast paced action and drifting. The only thing I wish for with this release is music from the previous RR titles, preferably R4 and RR5.
