Following a weird free, then not free release is the Kickstarter-funded Fist of Awesome [$0.99]. It's the quintessential side scrolling arcade beat 'em up homage, filled with plenty of humor that'd make any EnviroBear fan grin. We take it for a spin in this video, encompassing the first level which is basically the tutorial, and then the second bear-filled stage:

Definitely check out Fist of Awesome if you have any love for beat 'em ups, it's shockingly well done, and as Jared mentions in the video, might be the best game of its genre we've seen in a long time. The game is also available on the PC and OUYA, if you'd rather play it on another platform, but the touch controls work A-OK if you want to play it on the go.

Also check out monster 500 . It's a Mario kart game and it's free.

  • repapermunky

This game is great fun. I'm really enjoying it and I almost feel bad I got it for free. Almost.

    • diaskeaus

No IAP, yeah, a weird free release. I was in a weird mood when I got it, thinking it would be some one level, Slayin-game, but it is a full-bodied, extremely high quality game with tons of personality... And unlocks.

    • Jake7905

Hey, no one forced the developer to do it that way. Nothing to feel bad about.

    • VirtualBoyFreak

As the dev mentioned in TA forums, don't feel bad, just pay him back by spreading the word amongst friends. I think it's a fantastic homage to the beat'em ups of the 90's.

As far as replayability goes, it's the same replayability as Final Fight, Cadillacs and Dinosaurs, etc. I've played those from start to finish multiple times and I still enjoy them, even though you rescue the same people over and over 🙂

      • repapermunky

Yeah, that's why I felt I had to comment on this article. I wanted people to know how fun the game is. People say this often, but this is definitely one of those games where somebody put a good amount of soul into, and really tried to capture the essence of old beat em ups. Really good stuff here in this game. I'll support it, and you can bet I'll be supporting this developers next product as well!

      • Jake7905

Hey, I bet most of the people who downloaded the game for free were TA readers who'll spread the word and support future projects by this dev.

  • Slade Steele

They must have found the graphics artist for this game behind a bottle under a bridge somewhere...

  • joydiv

Absolutely boring game. This is what passes as a good game nowadays?

    • abodi

Actually it's what passed as games back in the early nineties too!

    • dariusjr98

Regardless of what you think, this is still better than %70 of the filth on the App Store nowadays.

      • Lurkingiowan

I find the controls to be insufferable on this game. Am I the only one?

      • AlpacaLips

Same here. It has a lot of heart, but if you can't control it, then it isn't a good game. Simple as that.

      • joydiv

Well to me that says more about the App Store itself than this game in particular.

    • anabolicMike

This was all ninja turtles, double dragon and a million others were. I loved them back in the day. This games pretty good when your taking a quick poop at work. Lol. I wasn't gonna download it but I was like yeah, screw it!

  • anabolicMike

    Yeah it has wild graphics

  • Ollivar Frank

    Is this worth the $4?

    • AlpacaLips

I got it for free, and almost immediately deleted it. It's impossible to control.

  • heresandypandy

Outstanding game on first play through but I feel like it would've been better in the long run if the campaign had been written so you could play it as multiple characters with their own unique base stats and skills. Sort of like how the arena mode is, but actually work through the story proper like that... It's a must-play though, the care and attention that went into the experience is worth the £4/$4 even if it isn't all that long and possibly doesn't have a load of replay value.

    • heresandypandy

The "to-do list" in the arena is a horrible obstruction by the way, especially on iPhone. It takes up far too much screen space. If the dev's reading I'd suggest that needs sorting. Also, there are a few bugs on the train and subway levels where the enemies wander off the map into the top half of the screen where they shouldn't be able to walk

  • hgoenge81

While its charming, and the theme song great, I just feel the controls to be really unresponsive.

  • Goggles789

I used to enjoy beat'em ups so much when I was younger, but their repetitive nature kinda wore out their welcome for me. For me, best beat'em up ever is TMNT 4. It had so much variety and they really nailed the music. This game looked tempting at first, but the longer I watched I was like, "Ok, the premise is hilarious but I feel like I've seen all it has to offer in this 12 minute video." Though, it looks like a great homage to Double Dragon.
