My brain just collapsed on itself. Legendary game designer Sid Meier is back at it, and his latest project, a WWI-era aerial combat strategy game called Ace Patrol, is coming to iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch this May 9.

According to publisher 2K Games, it'll be a free-to-play title that'll tasks users with piloting a selection of "30 vintage and historical WWI aircrafts" through 120 single-player missions, apparently split across four campaigns. It'll also pack in a two-player competitive mode via Game Center or hot-swapping on the same device.

Basically, anything Sid Meier or his studio Firaxis makes is awesome, thoughtful and deep, so I'm pretty stoked to give this a shot. May 9th is pretty soon, so the wait won't be too long.

oh this could be a sweet sweet game.

  • Zwilnik

This one's on my must grab list. Think I'll be in Sid's target market for the extra campaigns too.

  • Bool Zero

I have to totally agree with Brad's last statement! Pretty much anything that Sid Meier puts out I pretty much snatch up any platform! Color me interested and ready to buy this on release!

    • jamiejap

      trains was awfull!

  • Eddy

sweet, yesterday I was looking for any news about a red baron sequel, this might fill the gap

  • swarmster

Does Sid Meier experimenting with planes on a hex grid mean they will finally break free of their city/carrier shackles in Civ VI?

    Maybe!

I hope that the day will come were I'll read good news about an exciting upcoming release not followed by the dreadful "free-to-play" word, It's frustrating. Even though I can't see it coming, I still hope. But the day IAP were introduced to iOS platform, It was ruined for me, I skip every single one even thought I would have bought them otherwise (firemonkeys, gameloft...etc).

    • Eddy

blame on piracy, if more people bought games publishers would not be forced to cheap tactics like this.

      • ZarieoZ

Yup. Piracy is awful, we pay the price though. I've got my iPad & iPhone four years ago, haven't jailbracked them. I buy all my games. Sometime I wait for discounts cause I have more game than I can handle. Still, I'm sure gameloft games & firemonkey's real racing we're doing fine before the IAP stupidity hit them, they were rare & quality games that no developer took the time to do for the iOS platform, hey earned my respect with them but right now I just don't care if they are releasing anything anymore.

      • Eddy

agreed, firemint/firemonkey was bought by EA, that is the main problem. It doesn't matter how hard the times are, some companies will always try to rip you off, but unfortunately piracy is giving them an excuse to do so.

I am excited but a little guarded. If FREE it most likely means Freemium (free to play but endless little currency based IAPs to get any of the game's better fare).

The game is NOT a "freemium" game. Over at the Pocket Tactics forum, I've been talking with a number of people that have been playing the game already. A member by the name of "Bullwinkle" reported the following:

"There are three types of IAP, actually.

The first IAP is the campaigns. Treat these as unlocks for the full game. It's $0.99 to unlock the British campaign, $1.99 for each of the American, French, or German campaigns. Or you can buy all three (non-British) campaigns for $3.99. I haven't had the chance to dive deeply into the other nations yet, but I believe what you're really paying for is the *planes* each nation gets, and the ability to play as that nation. The mission types look to be the same. (The planes certainly fly differently, though, and there's something like 120 different missions total.)

The second IAP is the aces. There are 8 aces (2 for each nation) at $0.99 each, or the All-Aces Pack for $4.99. Each ace gives you a (presumably) historical skin you can apply to your craft (purely cosmetic) and adds a new possible perk to the pool of available perks (you already get 10 or so perks from the regular game, without ever buying any aces). A pilot only ever gets to choose one perk; your squadron leader gets it at the start and your other pilots get one if they reach 7 kills. These extra perks are completely unnecessary to beat the game. I bought the pack, and I'm enjoying the variety, but you don't need it at all.

The third IAP is consumable. Your pilots can get temporarily knocked out of action (damage, injury, or capture), but it looks like you can pay $0.99 to bring them back into action immediately. This is totally unnecessary, as long as you're willing to accept the consequences of failure (which happens a lot)."

Wow, thanks for the clarification. I'm all for permanent IAPs so if the game is even half-way decent (Sid's take on Steambirds) I'll snag those all to get a full game experience.
