Ron Gilbert Talks About His Upcoming Pirate-Themed Match Three

When Ron Gilbert announced on his blog that he was leaving Double Fine, he also revealed that he was working on a match-3 called Scurvy Scallywags in The Voyage to Discover the Ultimate Sea Shanty: A Musical Match-3 Pirate RPG. Naturally, we thought that was a joke so we just… didn’t write about it. Turns out, the game isn’t a joke. It’s a real game and it’s coming to iPhone and iPad “in the next month or so," Gilbert says in a new blog post about the title.

At its core, Scurvy Scallwags is a character-based match-3, but with a twist. When you make a match, the game board will collapse towards that match as opposed to just falling straight down like it would in most other match-3s. Gilbert says the change feels pretty intuitive. He continues:

“An odd side effect of doing this was you could move pieces around the board. So unlike Puzzle Quest — and just about every other match-3 RPG that sprang up after it — in Scurvy Scallywags you actually move your hero / pirate around the board and position her / him next to enemies to do battle. It creates this new layer to the matching that is a lot of fun."

The game also has this really appealing, almost cutesy look, as you’ll see. And, yeah, you’ll be able to dress up your dude with different hats, shirts, and weapons.

Fingers crossed that we actually get this one soon. It’s been awhile since we’ve been excited about a match-3. Bring it on!
