4 Pics 1 Word [Free] is a word guessing game. It presents you with four pictures and then tasks you with guessing what specific word fits with the theme of the photos presented. It's a simple game that really seems to be clicking with people if the App Store charts are any indication. It's also a weird game. Most of the time, the themes are much too simple and we're not 100 percent certain that this is the original 4 Pics 1 Word. There's a lot of them on the App Store, some by different developers.

Anyway, we played this game today because some really awesome dudes on Twitter said we should. As you can imagine, our playthrough had less to do with the actual mechanics of the game than it did with puzzling out why this thing is so popular.

If you'd like to see a few minutes, click on the video below. Also, we're totally open to TA Plays suggestions, so feel free to throw some below. Just, you know, don't suggest 4 Pics 1 Word Animal Edition or something because I'm pretty sure we couldn't handle it on the inside.

I would like to suggest a game called infinite, by Nexus Game Studio for a TA Plays consideration. There is also a free version called infinite: Prime. Thanks. ๐Ÿ™‚

I know you guys are probably already planning on it, but I'm hoping to see a Ridiculous Fishing TA Plays when it comes out (or earlier, if that's kosher, since I know Brad got his hands on an early copy, the lucky stiff).

You guys should do a TA Plays of Towelfight 2. It's similar to Binding of Issac (PC game), which I think you mentioned in an earlier TA Plays, and how there aren't many games like it on the App Store. Well Towelfight 2 is another, it just came out, and is pretty great.

I'd love to see a TA Plays on Ozone. I know it's an older game, but it's a hella-lot of fun.

CrazyQuest deserves a review. At one time it was the #1 free rpg but never got a nod from TA.

As far as, "4 pics, 1 word" goes..... Lol is all I have.... Just lol

The more interesting story is that this app is a carbon copy of an equally dubious and astonishingly popular 'game' called 'Whats the Word?' that came out a week or two earlier, and when i say copy i mean COPY, right down to the name which they were later forced to change. I don't imagine the good folks at TA have a bunch of time to spare on these kinds of titles otherwise I'm sure if they'd known they would have given credit (such as it is) to the correct party and not further publicity to yet another in the long line of app clones (read thieves).

This was something I noticed while browsing the store. It really is quite strange. Even for such a basic game premise, getting it out of the door within a week would be almost impossible. They had to have known about the game before it went live and got an early start, so we can't trust the release dates to tell us which game actually began development first. Something was definitely happening behind the scenes.

TA plays penumbear would be sweet. game of the week!

The reason why this game is so popular is because it's the ultimate game for "casuals". It will, of course, not appeal to the TouchArcade crowd at all. But for regular non-power users who just need a moment's diversion, this is ideal. Keep in mind you have people who have iPhones and iPads who don't even know what iOS is or what version of it they are using. And if you disbelieve that, try working in technical support for a company that also has a couple of mobile apps.

tl;dr: This game is not for the TA crowd. At all.

    Hello All
I've just launched a new word game called "d-pixing!"
It's quite similar to 4Pics 1Word, so I hope you think it's ok to post here.
You are given a word and you have to find it in amongst 12 images.
Below is the link to the free lite version.
It's a truly, unique and unusual re-working of the rebus puzzle.
    Cheers Professor Potts
