PSA: Many Hacked By Visiting iPhonedevsdk

posted February 19th, 2013 6:35 PM EDT by Eli Hodapp in News

If you're a Mac user that visited the iOS development site/forum iPhonedevsdk recently, it's a good idea to run the Java update and malware removal tool that was just released by Apple. Per the New York Times, the site has been the source of a fairly wide-spread attack that has hit Apple, Facebook, and several other large companies.

According to our sister site, MacRumors, iPhonedevsdk is still infected and visiting it is not recommended. The good news is, it's an easy fix, just be sure to load up the App Store app on your Mac and make sure you're up to date with everything and you'll be good to go.

I wonder what the motive was for the "hack"

    Good thing I don't own a Mac

If I may borrow a quote from All Things D: "When a computer incident happens on Apple’s Mac OS X, it’s a headline-making event. When it happens on Windows, it’s just another day."

Java vulnerabilities tend to be present across all platforms, it just happened that whoever utilised this one wanted to go for Macs. Windows owners should make sure they're fully updated too.

Because on Windows it happens every day since 1995 ;)

No, the date is 1985 for the first windows/dos computer to be released and get hacked in less then a year.

good, the less people using Macs, the less hackers will be targeting us Mac users... like @MidianGTX:disqus and @toucharcade-c4a99cc85c55513ff4a0d1ec8a52d56e:disqus said, like that would never happen to windows... or even linux...

I haven't visited the site but I did get a random java update so does that mean I'm good?

    • homosaur

You're better if you disable Java entirely.

And the point of the hack was ...?
Always curious what the various hackers intentions are...?

and they said macs will never get a virus......

malware/spyware/keylogger != virus. and there might be some, even for linux. they just don't get spread as ruindows'.
