Earlier this afternoon, Jared and I gave Traal [Free] a spin. It's a top-down horror slash puzzle game that tasks you with solving the mystery of a dungeon while avoiding its various inhabitants and spike-y obstacles. Don't let the simplistic, almost retro-y visual design fool you: this thing requires some serious patience and wits.

Look familiar, maybe? Traal first appeared as a flash game. You can play it here with a keyboard. That page, by the way, notes that Traal is the end product of a 48 hour dev cycle, which is kinda blowing our minds.

Anyway, if you're in the mood for something different on iOS, this might be it. We love the ideas and themes, even if bits of the scenario design are a little wonky. Give it a look below:

Brilliant atmosphere. And it gets really challenging quickly.

  • Arch Deluxe

Always a major red flag when a game is pitched as being developed in 24 or 48 hours. Why should we care about that gimmick? How about taking the time to make something good instead of a stinker like this game?

    • tigerclaws

I'd agree with this if the game wasn't completely free with no IAP.

      • Arch Deluxe

OK, then it's a free piece of crap. But why would Touch Arcade cover it?

      • Jacob Gehman

Maybe because, you know, there are a bunch of people who don't consider it a piece of crap? Novel idea, I know.

I actually like simple, clean games. It reminds me of better days. Go play BLOPS and leave the adults to their games.

    • toxiccheese

So it wasn't a good game? What did you dislike about it?

      • Arch Deluxe

        Just watch the video.

      • webman2k

Ah, so you must be referring to the graphics. You're right then, because a game can't be challenging or fun without bump map lighting.

Personally I wouldn't pitch it that way, on the page for the flash version it is more a mention than a pitch. :P I think the quality of the game speaks for itself!

I don't think you can judge the quality of a game from how long it took to develop though. And while this was originally made in 48 hours, it has been poked and polished since...

    • Happy W

For me, it's a red flag when someone ignores the distinction between a "note" and a "pitch" just so they can indulge in some priggish bluster.

    Thanks for playing!

I'm currently working on an update that'll add better graphics for the vision cone, look for that in a week or so.

I would say if you're interested but haven't yet watched the video (but for some reason are reading these comments), maybe don't watch the video above until you've completed the game? There are minor spoilers that might affect how you play. But whatever, do what you will... :)

    • Adams Immersive

I'll take your advice and play it first. I like the look (reminds me a little of Zaga) and I like the download size!

Thanks for the game. I see that update is out.

Maybe in future to recoup some cost you could add ads with an IAP option to disable. Nobody has paid, so nobody could complain! (Who am I kidding...)

  • saehild

I love the purity of this game.

  • Eoghann

    Getting it! :)

  • Heboi456

So you guys just blindly follow what touch arcade says?

  • ratsinheat

I'd hate these same two reviewers so much less if they didn't do that phony "what's up?" to each other in the intros every time. Ugh. I cannot describe how they get under my skin. I just watch gameplay on mute to check the game out.

    • http://twitter.com/JaredTA Jared Nelson

Well, they aren't phony, we are saying what's up to each other. Nothing in these videos is ever rehearsed or even talked about ahead of time.

      • 4ppleseed

But it is a bit 'canned' sounding as it's the same every time.

      • http://twitter.com/JaredTA Jared Nelson

I don't really know how many different ways there are to say "what's up!" :) But point taken, so thanks guys for the feedback.

      • garret44

Don't worry about it Jared, it's all good. You guys are awesome! Some people just try to find something to complain about

In fact you guys should just keep doing it to piss them off

      • Tatiana

I'd be honored if Jared said "what's up" to me!

      • http://twitter.com/JaredTA Jared Nelson

        What's up, Tatiana :)

      • Arch Deluxe

        What a lech.

  • Jerutix

Man, this looks like a "throw my iPhone at a wall in frustration" sort of game. That's why I have an Otterbox.

  • Dailion Ando

    fun & short

  • PumpkinEater78

I agree that it had really frustrating bits, but actually having been able to complete a nice, free game in half an hour (without finding all the scrolls) was very refreshing.

As a side note, anyone who spends THEIR time making something for YOUR enjoyment and then GIVES it to you for free is to be thanked. If you don't want to play it, keep your trap shut. It's such a shame this world is fettered with ungrateful asshats these days.

    • garret44

      Agreed!!
