Well, it's Friday and our week of the best iOS games of 2012 is over. Looking back on all these posts, we saw an incredible amount of amazing games over the last year. No matter what genre(s) you prefer, we dug through everything the App Store had to offer and came up with the best of the best.

If you disagreed with any of our picks, or misunderstood the purpose of these lists and thought we "missed" things, you're in luck- The TouchArcade Forums 2012 Game of the Year nomination process is still taking place. Head on to the thread and give it a look then drop your favorite games in for inclusion.

We'll post about the winner when the whole thing is over with the release of the next batch of new games on the 3rd, but if you want to participate, don't wait.

Anyway, here's a handy list of all of our "Best of" articles:

...Wow, that's a lot of games.

I know you've done this before and you've done a great job with your current lists, but any chance in lists for specific devices? (so like iPad 4/iPad Mini or simply best games for iPad period). Keep up the good work guys.

  • bones boy

I don't always agree with your choices, but you and your team's commitment and dedication to the mobile gaming scene year after year should definitely be commended! Thanks for the hard work.

      Hear hear!

  • Luigi_Mario

This is ridiculous, you've singled out 17 "best of" genre lists and something like 100 total games. By honoring everything you've effectively honored nothing. iOS gaming wasn't as incredibly great in the past year as TouchArcade is implying. If you guys don't do a better job of distinguishing between the good and the great than you are no better than a glorified gaming PR site.

Ok, here's the number of reviews TA put out this year and the associated star ratings:

      5 stars: 29
      4.5 stars: 89
      4 stars: 181
      3.5 stars: 115
      3 stars: 65
      2.5 stars: 10
      2 stars: 10
      1 star: 1

This can be read two ways: either the TA staff are biased towards giving a wide variety of games 4 stars... OR there were a LOT of 4-3.5 star quality games this year.

Heck, if TA IS biased, they may not be aware of it; confronting something that could be negative about one's personality is extremely hard to do constructively, and often results in hurt feelings and zero personal growth. It is easier, less painful and more productive to focus on the positive things about oneself and improving that aspect, unless the negativity absolutely MUST be removed in order to move forward. Only the TA staff would know what the truth is, and it's not our business to pry the truth from them. If we knew the truth, would WE improve as people? HELL NO. That would just make us assholes and trolls.

      Anyway, those are my thoughts.

We are biased towards posting games that our readers care about and not reviewing junk. Do you people really want us to post 1,000 word reviews of things like this: http://appshopper.com/games/bring-it-on ?

    • http://toucharcade.com Eli Hodapp

Do you realize that many tens of thousands (that might even be low) iOS games were released in 2012? Of those, we reviewed roughly 500, which were already largely the cream of the crop on the App Store. These are just the best of the best. Would you prefer we start spending time reviewing shitware with zero redeeming qualities just to make our other reviews stand out as obviously good a bit more? I'm not sure what the solution is to this "problem" of yours.

We're a game discovery site, you come here to find good things to put on your iOS device, so of course we're only going to post about great games. Why would we waste our time and our readers' time with anything but that?

      • MrAlbum

It's the negativity syndrome, I think. The negativity syndrome is thus: negative stuff is more "visible" than positive stuff in the human mindset, which means it is easier to find fault with a particular thing than it is to find something praiseworthy.

In other words, people who do nothing but complain are being highly lazy. You guys did a great job finding the best games this year; 10000000 would not be so popular if you guys did not showcase it, for example.

      • Luigi_Mario

I agree, there is little value in reviewing a bunch of crap. But if MrAlbum's number are correct, then there were 118 games rated 4.5 or 5 stars last year, which I would define as "excellent." Would you really argue that truly outstanding games were released last years at a rate of more than 2 per week?

      • MrAlbum

By that logic, since it is relatively easy to believe that Eli is correct that "tens of thousands" of games overall were released on iOS this year, then that would mean that over 200 games were released per week.

In that respect, then yes, I am more inclined to take Eli's route to iOS reviewing, since the only way to make reviews of all those games PER WEEK would be to have a staff that could not only pump out the number of reviews, but at a baseline level of quality for each of those reviews on top of that. TouchArcade would have to employ tons more people, AND pay those people, and I don't think Eli has the resources to make that happen. Even so, that would be a managerial headache even if it were somehow feasible.

In that light, Eli's doing the best job he can, so cut the guy some slack already people X(

      • MrAlbum

And yes, that means that it is totally possible that more than two games out of more than two hundred were "excellent" per week.

        BOOM!

    • http://twitter.com/JaredTA Jared Nelson

You should try telling that to all the people complaining their favorite game didn't make one of our lists.

  • Uksweeney

Love these top game categories. But you're missing an kids games of 2012.

    • Jeff432

I'm sure these adults wouldn't want to play several kids games to find out which one is the best.

  • http://www.igeeksblog.com/ Jignesh Padhiyar

Mindblowing collection here but as you said, it's becoming so congested that it's hard to actually see real unique gameplay these days. It's almost as if every game is a spin-off or take-off from older games.

Bit disappointed that Great Big War Game got bupkis here when TA gave it five stars tbh, but fair enough - there's tons of excellent games about which is great.

As to the constant moaning. Enough already ffs. Other sites are available. Or if you want to make your own top 10 lists and get millions of viewers, phpbb is free to install...

  • MrSHakerEsq

I don't get why everyone has a beef against TA for their charts however I do think that too many of their ratings are top heavy, making it hard to distinguish the great from the good and the good from the crap.

    • MrAlbum

See the comments above. I think they explain things rather well.

  • mam snow

Hmm, some are really good such as Fieldrunners 2, The Simpsons™: Tapped Out... but there are some I don't think deserved.

Recently found some nice free games such as iSwinging, angry king kong dexule...maybe they should add to the top 2013 :D
