Well, this is about the last thing I expected on a Sunday morning, but it'd appear that Square's The World Ends With You: Solo Remix is working its way across international App Store regions. Assuming that is what is happening and this isn't some sort of strange Asia-specific launch, we should be collecting pins in the US version at 11:00 PM Eastern.

The World Ends With You: Solo Remix is launching at $18 for the iPhone version and $20 for the iPad. Sadly, neither seem to be universal. Square has an entire TWEWY iOS site up detailing all the new stuff included in the game. I'm most excited about the redrawn art with retina display support, and the soundtrack is even getting some new songs.

This release caught us by surprise, but we'll have a TA Plays video and a review up in the not too distant future if you want to hold out before dropping your $18 (or $20) to see what we think. In the meantime, stop by the thread in our forums.

Disappointed there's no universal build.  Wish they'd make the iPad one so.  Can't double-dip at $18, though this game does tempt me sorely ("Calling" is my ring tone 🙂 ).

Easily my favorite DS game of all time.  This looks different enough to be interesting.  Anyone tried it at 2x on iPad?  Would love to know how icky that is.

    • Perd

Square Enix doesn't even allow you to play the iPhone version on the iPad at all. They block use of it on the iPad with an error message "must be used on devices with camera flash."...FORCING people who have both to buy both, in turn getting ca$h...They're scumbag, greedy money-hungry thieves. Already knowing it wasn't universal from the start was a huge middle finger, but this just proves they don't give a CRAP abiut their fans. All they want is money...

  • TurboRuhland

This might be worth the 18 dollars. The thing that intrigues me is the fact that it was originally made for touch screen. I'd love to see more of what they did to combine the two screens though. The battles in the original could get cluttered enough without your partner on the bottom screen.

  • jeffmd

No ipod 3g support makes me a sad panda. Not even a possibility of playing it on my android phone either. 🙁

    • xDyNaMiiCx

You need to upgrade your device.

      • jeffmd

I have an evo 3d, which is essentially more powerfull then an iphone 4, I have upgraded. they just don't support it.

      • http://twitter.com/h1dd3n_m0nk 01000101 Brad

I wouldn't say "no Android support" just yet as the platform is booming in terms of games (Play Store gift cards finally coming) and may very well get it. Android has the DS remake of Final Fantasy III! I won't be buying TWEWY for my iPod touch anyway but if it makes it over to Android, I'll def be playing it on my EVO. If not, always have the DS version.

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100001981770769 John Ovchinnikov

Hm, looks very interesting! I think I will buy it if there is no any sort of IAP right now or in nearest future

    • ducksFANjason

At$18 & $20, there better not be any IAP... It's Square Enix though and they're usually pretty good in that department.

    • ducksFANjason

I'm not sure why it cut off my comment buy it was SUPPOSED to say the following:

At $18 & $20, there better not be IAP! I don't think there will be though. Square Enix is usually pretty good in that department. I just hope it controls well! This is my favorite game of all time!

    • ducksFANjason

Let's try this one more time! (I think the TA app has an issue with the ampersand symbol). Here is what it should say:

At $18 and $20 there better not be any IAP! I don't think there will be though. Square Enix is usually pretty good in that department. I just hope it controls well. This is my favorite game of all time so it's an insta-buy!

  • wingz

So this isnt for ipod touch 4g

    • Alex13111

Well, the main reason is that the iPod Touch only has 256 MB of ram. People always complain, and there is the reason why they can't play it.

      • wingz

Damn i wish i had a iphone 4s ive been applying for jobs for almost 2 years problem is im not 18 so jobs arent tht easy for me to get so i guess im in a tough spot.

      • Alex13111

Yeah. I get you. Jobs are hard to come by when you are still a minor.  and Apparently this is a good game, never had a chance  to play this back in the day.

      • Flare_TM

Go to uni and get £1,800 every term (3 times a year), fixed.

  • Yuchen Zou

If they nail the gameplay conversion then this'll be the first $10+ game I purchase on my iPhone. So excited.

  • http://twitter.com/At_God Austin O'Halloran

Incredible Game. I'm definately giving it a try

  • Michael Matzat

It´s one of the best new games Squareenix put out in the past years. There are a ton of reviews around for the DS version if you want to check out story and gameplay facts.

    • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_5FLRQI2X2LU3IHMCG7HEAEFD5I Cat Astrophy

TBH it's the only good original game SE has ever released since the merger.

  • http://profile.yahoo.com/WDOYAYUZPIULUUXYHBTG4CYHCY Jonathan Fernandez

they are going to mess up twewy`s image as a cult following with an overpriced ios app that no one will buy too bad we didnt get a sequel instead just like square enix to mess something great up

    • http://www.facebook.com/epicbawksy Hans Kisaragi

Square has the balls to charge more then 99 cents.. i will gladly buy it when i can, not in my app store yet

    • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_CKBNMJGLGCBQOSH2BM264QIHLI Bridget

Sadly, the app will likely sell well, because "SQUARE ENIX ZOMG", which seems to be able to get people to buy even absolute trash like FFXIII.

This one on the DS is a pretty decent game, but...... no matter how they try to push it, the iOS version IS just a port, and probably one that they had to take some liberties with to make it work on here, yet they're STILL gonna charge well beyond the normal price because they are that full of themselves.

Feh.   That's one company I'd *really* like to see crash and burn, but unfortunately as long as people continue to be overly wowed by shiny cutscenes and similar things, they'll continue to do fine.

      • ducksFANjason

Why do they need to "crash and burn" for you to be happy? Seems a bit evil and nonsensical if you ask me. If you don't like them, don't buy their products and ignore them. Wishing them death (even if it's corporate death) is illogical just because you don't like their games...

And $20 for a game that has an average completion time of roughly 30 hours is a good deal. If you don't like them, fine, say that, but wishing them ill is ridiculous.

      • MrAlbum

They cut no corners. They didn't take any liberties. This game, bar none, is just as good as it was on the DS. Even better; the artwork was upscaled/redrawn close to perfectly, the music sounds as good if not better, the combat pays homage to the original split-screen gameplay and IT ALL RUNS PHENOMENALLY FAST AND FLUID.

It's an awesome port, and 100 percent worth the money. If you still have the game on DS, then this isn't essential; but if you lost it/let it go/never got the chance to play this before, now's your chance.

Pick your platform and stick with it tho; that price tag is a shocker, but the product is soooo worth it.

That's my humble opinion. Alright trolls, I know you're out there! Go ahead, waste your time! The port WILL stand on its own merits IN SPITE OF YOUR HATRED. AND PEOPLE WILL ADORE IT ACCORDINGLY.

        Yours Truly,

        Mr. Album

      • http://www.facebook.com/ferdinand.coetzer Ferdinand Coetzer

Hey you! Thats mean square enix makes superb games! If final fantasy was so crap as you claim why is it stil goin on. Do you even know the amount of time, money and well pretty much anything thats goes into the making of their games. Yeah so far i had only one bad ps3 game of them but that doesnt mean that they are all bad. The entire ui to port over a game from controls to touch is very different, dont say something if you dont even know how it gets there

  • Gabriel Santos

overpriced? its a DS quality game at a cheap price compared to all other DS titles

    • Optic-9

Agreed! Not to mention that the DS version is quite rare to find now =/

      • Relytgninroht

They seem to have done some reprints recently. It's become available on several online retailers that had stopped selling it because it was unavailable. MSRP is $20 now IRRC.

  • troyster

An all time favorite of mine! Wish it was universal...

  • kendahlj

Interested but not at $18. Just bought Darksiders for $16 shipped (new) for the PS3 and am having such a blast I have decided $2.99 is my limit for iOS games. I just can't justify a higher cost when I love my console too much...

    • Relytgninroht

It's a console quality title though. Widely regarded as one of the best DS games made.

      • kendahlj

        I'd pay a little more for a good adventure...Edna & Harvey was worth the $6 I paid....

  • http://profile.yahoo.com/P2Q3NF4IRWMMEVEMCEQCAS7UME Anthony

Is their retina support for the iPad?

    • http://profile.yahoo.com/42YS2N67LP6IDUKBZUUCMSZW7M Pray For Death

Knowing SE, no there won't be. But don't worry, the game has retina support for iPhone 4/4s!

    • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_5FLRQI2X2LU3IHMCG7HEAEFD5I Cat Astrophy

You can see the pixels on the iPad 3 so it's not retina. They support retina on the only retina devices that exist (iPhone 4 and 4s). For someone stupid enough to buy the CR games at their price point, I'm sure you'll pay for this dramatically superior title without flinching.

  • DecafTable

How is this popular? I wouldn't even play it if it was free.

    • Ajstadel

It was considered one of the best RPG's of all time, and a complete innovation for the DS. It achieved a cult following, which is probably why there is such a sharp divide between people liking and hating it.

      • Ajstadel

I accidentally a phrase. It gained a cult following because of its high complexity and difficulty.

      • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_5FLRQI2X2LU3IHMCG7HEAEFD5I Cat Astrophy

Also story, soundtrack, and art style.

  • Vtec51O

Looks like they got rid of the dual screen battle system. Which I think is a plus. It was the only thing I didn't like about the original. Splitting your focus between the two screens was annoying. Also really sucks this is not going to be universal. Wish Square Enix would get over themselves and at least make their games universal. Especially if they're going to be charging $15+ for them.

  • Michael Matzat

Got it for iPad 2. The art is not 100% crisp but it´s ok, i am having some trubble getting into the fighting system, it feels less natural than most iPad touch to fight titles. I think i am getting better, but switching back and forth betwen my two heros still causes some headache for me.

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_5FLRQI2X2LU3IHMCG7HEAEFD5I Cat Astrophy

This might actually be the first thing SE has released on an iDevice that is OK to cost more than $10.

    • http://twitter.com/Dekon7 Dekon

Not at all, look at their chaos rings games (all 10$+).

      • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_5FLRQI2X2LU3IHMCG7HEAEFD5I Cat Astrophy

Yeah, and those weren't ok to be more than $10. Very stale and date gameplay, unimpressive graphics.

      • http://profile.yahoo.com/P2Q3NF4IRWMMEVEMCEQCAS7UME Anthony

Yeah, you're definitely not full of $hit... I'll put as much thought into my reply as you did yours. And "... those weren't ok to be more than $10?" Get out, you're full of it.

      • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_5FLRQI2X2LU3IHMCG7HEAEFD5I Cat Astrophy

Cult following for this game: 1
No cult following for CR games: 0

That tends to happen when your game is garbage.

        Cry more, sheep.

      • http://flavors.me/kioshi kioshi

Your opinion isn't a 'reason' the game is 'horrible'.

CR Omega actually bored me to tears but I saw great gfx and found ui and gameplay very polished. So much that I got CR 2 and really enjoyed the story so I find it a great game despite disliking Omega. I was also impressed by CR 2's gfx (as was every reviewer I saw). So yeah, you have your reasons and that's fine, just don't say it like they are a consensus.

      • http://profile.yahoo.com/P2Q3NF4IRWMMEVEMCEQCAS7UME Anthony

Man... I thought I was a bit too hostile but you're practically foaming at the mouth, aren't you? Hilarious!

Poster mentions cult following and proceeds to call others sheep because their games lack said cult following. Genius and definitely well thought-out. And I didn't put any thought into my reply, you say? Very perceptive. Read the quote again, several times, and maybe you'll understand, but probably not.

Hint: Gameplay for [insertgame] is very stale and outdated, has unimpressive graphics, dry music, and an ugly UI. I can do it too, see? PATHETIC.

Anyway, good job getting me to reply twice, mediocre troll. Have fun typing up your next reply, although I won't be feeding you thrice by reading or replying. Starve, I guess?

      • farnsworth_pro

He does have a point. TWEWY oozes style and substance

Chaos really felt like an afterthought.  A cash in so they could have more properties >$10 on iOS. I didn't think it was nearly worth the money either.

  • ExcaliburEdge

  • Gemutlichkeit

    Textbook JRPG nonsense.

    • Tondog

It is not like a typical JRPG at all. It's one of the most unique RPGs I've ever played.

    • Austin Riddle

It's definitely an acquired taste.  I had this for DS, tried to play through it twice, and just couldn't.  I didn't like the characters or enemies and the whole game felt like a Jet Set Radio RPG fail.

      • Gemutlichkeit

Exactly Austin. The gameplay mechanic is innovative, sure but what good is that when the story and characters are typical and bring nothing to the table? I too played it on the DS and couldn't come up with a good reason to dedicate time and energy into the game.

    • http://twitter.com/Inaba_kun Inaba-kun

What an absurd thing to say. This isn't like any other JRPG, it's an incredibly unique game. Maybe you should try playing it before spouting such rubbish again.

  • Austin Riddle

CR is crap.  It's so bad that if it was a free flash game people would still not play it. Just because it's on iPhone, doesn't make it a good game.

And apparently I'm too stupid to hit the reply button.......

  • http://twitter.com/Inaba_kun Inaba-kun

Nice to see proper high quality games on iOS. I wouldn't mind the price IF it was Universal, but it isnt, which is a scam.

    • Tondog

I've come to expect Square to be a little backwards when it comes to iOS pricing, which is why I don't usually buy their stuff. TWEWY is an exception because it is my favorite JRPG ever.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Neal-L-Ensor/1664689766 Neal L Ensor

I bit finally.  I am disappointed with lack of universality, but I want to do my part to encourage AAA, high-quality titles on iOS.  If we want to end the tidal wave of freemium rubbish, we're gonna have to pony up.

I bought FFT and loved it, I'd buy this one on nostalgia alone, but it looks to be an excellent game anyway.  All those complaining from atop their stack of $60 Xbox / PS3 games need to put up or shut up, IMO.  I'm one of those willing to put $ on the line for my new "console" of choice.

    • farnsworth_pro

Max Payne, GTA3 and Metal Slug 3 are AAA IMO, they still debuted under $10 (though they are older titles)

Not saying TWEWY isn't worth $20, but it isn't exactly new either, I just hope square doesn't get carried away with their upper end pricing

  • Kevin Roberts

I wonder why this game snubs older devices? If you look at the pictures of the game, there's clearly nothing there a first gen iPad couldn't handle, or even a third gen iPod touch. This is a port of a game that was originaly designed on a device that used a couple of old ARM processors that don't give you a 100mhz combined and has only 4megs of ram. It's got my curiosity piqued, so I might have to check out the DS version since none of my iOS devices are supported. Shame though as I would have preferred to check it out on the iPad's bigger screen.

  • presto77

I'm enjoying that so many quality games are now being produced/ported to ios but I'm still a little skeptical that they are quality ports and not just quick hit money grabs. By all accounts this game is amazing, I just hope it translated well to this platform. I don't mind the price as iOS is now my primary gaming system with my hectic schedule and commute. I'll wait a day or two to see how reviews are for this version (once the fans of the other platform version calm down) and make a decision to buy then.

With this and baldurs gate just around the corner I doubt my other gaming devices will get much love anytime soon.

One question, is the game "quick fix" friendly? Meaning can I play for 15-20 minutes and save my progress or do I need to play large portions (60 min+) to reach checkpoints?

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Neal-L-Ensor/1664689766 Neal L Ensor

Admittedly I'm fairly early into it on the iOS version, but from what I see, it "saves" practically every time something significant happens (cut scene, battle, etc.) so it should be pretty forgiving on short play runs.  Hopefully, as I'm in that boat pretty often as well.  Pretty impressed with the art and music, and the battle mechanics are fun.  Takes a bit of getting used to, but I recall the DS version "clicking" for me around the third day (in game).  The story and action picks up considerably after the first two.

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1134582760 Nicole Hunter

It was originally kind to quick fixes as well.  It saves quite often.

  • ImJPaul

Square Enix really needs to adapt to the new age of iPhone gaming. If u want both versions u have to spend $38. Where most games u can play both versions for $1-$5. I'll buy the iPad version because I've always wanted to play this game it just would have been nice to play it on both on the go and at home.

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1134582760 Nicole Hunter

So THAT's how they are going to do it.  I loved this game on DS but I had no idea how it would lend itself to an ios platform or a 1 screen platform for that matter.  I'm curious.  For $18 I'll need to do some digging before I quench a curiosity though.

  • MrFabulous995

Wooow thats great.. I couldn't wait to get this game for NO$GBA emulator but my pc was reinstalled so I was stuck in the middle of game and now there's 1 coming up for iphone. Can't wait. They should make more ds games for ios and android phones.

    • xDyNaMiiCx

No they shouldn't, as a iOS gamer, I refuse to get old ports from a NDS. Need original games. To those that are complaining about no old device support, I say. Upgrade your device. No one should be on 3gs or iPad gen 1.

      • ducksFANjason

I'd like some other DS ports. The DS had a HUGE library of very good games, I wouldn't mind seeing more come to iOS!

      • xDyNaMiiCx

Good? I say the only good NDS games are the Poke'mon series. Lol and dragon quest. Rest are not big titles in my book.

      • ducksFANjason

Really?? I'd love more Phoenix Wright (2-4)! Also Trauma Center 1 and 2, Etrian Odyssey 1-3, Final Fantasy Tactics A2, Magical Starsign, Master of the Monster Lair, Radiant Historia, Rune Factory 1-3, 9 Persons 9 Hours 9 Doors, Professor Layton 1-4, Contact, Lock's Quest, Lost Magic, Ninja Town, Advance Wars 1 and 2...

No joke, all of those 26 games I listed would be insta-buys for me even if priced at $10-$15. And that's only the tip of the iceberg for the DS's stellar library IMO.
