On the heels of the release of Canabalt across PSP, PS Vita, and PS3, Semi-Secret's Adam Saltsman is asking fans if they are interested in a possible 2-player mode for the phone versions of the often celebrated endless runner. "Would y'all be interested in seeing a 2-player mode in Canabalt [$2.99] on iOS and Android," he asked, simply, on Twitter.

Speaking with us, Saltsman says that he's trying to gauge if such an endeavor would be worth it. He wants Canabalt, which debuted in 2009, to stay relevant, but he also understands the risk involved with post-release feature additions, no matter how simple they are to implement. The time it would take to do this, for example, is time that could be spent on another of his fresher projects. He says that any input into this matter is invaluable. He also says that he has other ideas for content, and if this stuff takes minimal effort, it'll probably be worth it.

For what it's worth, we're screaming "yes" to everything at our monitors right now.

    Will not buy it.

Why on earth would I pay $3 for a game that also has ads in it!?!?

(Ads were added in the most recent update.)

    • Adam Saltsman

So, speaking as one of the two creators of Canabalt iOS, I have to say that is a strange claim. We DID do a one-time pop-up notification when we launched Aquaria, a game which we published in conjunction with our friends Derek, Alec and Andrew.

Is that the ad you are referring to?

      • SoyGreen

No, I have not purchased. I am referring to the negative reviews you have in the app store.

You face the problem of appearing to be an app you have to pay for that is also delivering ads.

I just face palmed so hard I think I gave myself road rash.

      • SoyGreen

Hope you didn't hurt yourself unnecessarily.

But, I believe I was clear in my original post that I hadn't purchased and whether you agree or not... The reviews paint a perception of an app.

I, personally, am not interested in apps that I have to buy that include ads... I understand devs need an income... But I will gladly pay for an app to avoid any ads.

Unfortunately for the devs, in the current reviews on the app store, it looks like ads were recently added.

        smh.

I can say with 100% certainty that there are no ads in this game. Namely, by having the app open on my iPhone RIGHT NOW whereas you are vehemently opposed to this game based on reviews from other people and refusing to give it a chance? It's a shame that you put so much emphasis on what other people say instead of making an opinion for yourself and in the process end up passing a great game like this.

        P.S., I would love a 2-player mode.

      • SoyGreen

I may be a little knee jerk in my opposition. I hope if I nab it that you are right! I have just had a couple experiences with apps where I bought it with no ads and the devs decide to add them later. (gameloft is quite guilty of this one...)

Nothing frustrates me more. I am 100% willing to purchase an app. When I was an android user I would purchase the Angry Birds to not have to deal with ads for example.

Hope the people with the false reviews sometime feel compelled to correct the reviews. (I just noticed more than 1 that said this...)

"he also understands the risk involved with post-release feature additions"
hehe, I think he mostly understand that he'll get more money by releasing a new game than by doing an update!

Would make a nice 2-player game on the iPad, like Mirrors Edge.

  • GiHub

I never bought it but would if it had a multiplayer component so I do think he would get new sales coming in. I did the same for Doodle Jump and Trenches for example. I'm a sucker for competitive games :-P

I'd love to see this implemented.

YES!! I love Canabalt. It was one of the first iOS titles I purchased and still remains one of my most-played games. I would thoroughly enjoy playing this title with friends.

Also, for anybody on the fence about buying this game, DO IT! The price tag may seem steep, but it is, in my opinion, the epitome of everything that iOS gaming, and worth every cent. It's easy to pick up and play, but is extremely immersing when you get into it. The graphics are beautiful, the sounds and music are great, and the controls are tight. Kudos to Semi-Secret for this game.

hey, Adam Saltsman! I have some quick questions for you. 1: will you add achivements? :O the game would get so much more replay value i think :) and 2: can you make it so there is a option for language. My game is in Swedish, and the Swedish text have some spelling errors that are realy annoying. and, realy. I don't think any Swedish guy like to play there video games in Swedish. here in Sweden, we kinda like English more,, in everything :P me, and my friends don't even have text on movies we watch, beacuse the text is annoying :P whould love to play this in English insted.

i think the game whould be so much more awesome if you added this things :P and YES to 2players xD that sounds amazing! and ofc i love this game, and btw,  can't wait to play the hunger games! i read the first book only to have some bakground story to when i play this game haha xD :P

Why don't you just buy the latest Humble Bundle if you're itching to play Canabalt 2 player?
