About a year ago, Apple celebrated the download of the ten-billionth App Store app by gifting the downloader of that app a $10,000 iTunes gift card. Now, it's doing a similar thing to celebrate 25 billion apps sold. A new counter has appeared on Apple's official web site alongside this text:

As of today, nearly 25 billion apps have been downloaded worldwide. Which is almost as amazing as the apps themselves. So we want to say thanks. Download the 25 billionth app, and you could win a US $10,000 App Store Gift Card. Just visit the App Store and download your best app yet.

MacRumors explains that there's two ways to win this promotion: (a) be lucky enough to grab the 25 billionth app or (b) fill out this entry form. Whoever downloads the app or submits the entry form after the 24,999,999,999th app is sold wins. Maybe it'll be you, eh? Just remember who told you about this.

Well, that's a lot of 99 cent apps for the winner.

Yes, that’s a lot of downloads! Over twice what I spend on the App Store in a month!

That's not much money considering how incredibly small the odds are that you win.

Well if you win and you're not interested in the $10,000 in credit I'll give you my mailing address and you can send it my way.

at the rate of that counter, we're about 16 days away from having a winner

actually more like 12 days at approximately 1000 apps every 1.5 seconds

I presume they're doing more than just that? I mean who the hell can actually use an iTunes card of that value anyway?  Free apps for life? - we're pretty much there already with the prices charged.

When Android did their similar 10 billionth promotion they gave away 100 apps - 10 apps a day for 10 cents over 10 days. Big benefit to their customers and the 100 devs that got featured.

I just clocked the timer at 1,000 apps every 2.5 seconds. If that rate doesn't vary, which it probably does depending on the time of day, but assuming it doesn't, that will put the 25 billionth app download at aproximately 8:58pm PST on March 6th.
